Madness @ Ibiza Rocks 2014 - The Review

Madness Ibiza Rocks 2014 Review

Madness @ Ibiza Rocks 2014 - The Review

Not an unusual headline, but this time it wasn't about another crazy night in the West End. Madness were back at Ibiza Rocks where, 2 years ago, they produced probably the best gig of the Summer. A sell-out crowd was expected and the venue was already busy as supporting act, Hollie Cook, took to the stage.

Hollie has a strong musical background (her dad was the drummer for the Sex Pistols) and has collaborated with the likes of Ian Brown, Jamie T and Prince Fatty. She has a laid-back style that fuses reggae and soul into a very pleasing sound. Her hits 'Milk and Honey', 'Walking In The Sand' and 'Body Beat' were well received and the crowd loved her cover of The Whispers 'And The Beat Goes On'. Hollie released a new album in May and, on this showing, it's certainly worth a listen.

Ibiza Rocks resident DJ, Doorly, filled the gap between acts and this, in my opinion, is the weak link at this venue. He started well playing hits from The Specials and other ska bands, but soon drifted into playing EDM tracks which just didn't compliment the feel of the event.

So, with much anticipation in the air, Madness took to the stage and blasted straight into 'Night Boat To Cairo'. The crowd, with a slightly higher average age than normally found in San Antonio, burst into life and didn't stop for the next hour and a bit. 'Embarrassment' followed next with 'The Prince', 'Oui Oui Si Si Ja Ja Da Da' and 'My Girl 2' closely behind.

'Sun and Rain' was next and led into a brilliant cover of Max Romeo's 'Chase The Devil' which, possibly due to The Prodigy's sampling of it, had the crowd bouncing around. Time for a break for the band and guitarist George Foreman made use of the breather to sing a karaoke version of the Beastie Boys it 'Fight For Your Right... To Party'. A refreshed Suggs returned to follow that with 'Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life'.

After that light interlude it was back to the, well.... Madness. A quartet of their biggest hits came in rapid succession driving the crowd both wild and back to their childhood. 'House Of Fun', 'Baggy Trousers', 'Our House' and 'It Must Be Love' all proved that good tunes do stand the test of time.

So, that was it over... or not, as the case may be. This audience were going nowhere without an encore and the lads duly obliged. 'One Step Beyond' and the self-titled 'Madness' brought the house down and sent the crowd dancing into the night, pork-pie hats, braces and all.

Madness go from strength to strength and long may that continue. Same time next year please!

Lily Allen, Madness and more for massive Ibiza Rocks and Mallorca Rocks shows

Lily Allen, Madness Ibiza Rocks Mallorca Rocks

Lily Allen, Madness and more for massive Ibiza Rocks and Mallorca Rocks shows

Spring is in the air and the sound of summer is just around the corner as Rocks cranks up the heat and turns up the volume on the annual 16 week series of live outdoor gigs.  Adding to the huge summer line up is Lily Allen making her Mallorca and Ibiza Rocks debut and ska legends Madness, returning for what will be one of the standout sets of the season. Hot new talents Ella Eyre, Dan Croll and Krept and Konan are also confirmed, with yet more still to come.

Lily Allen is undeniably one of Britains most provocative pop stars and as widely reported, it was one fateful summer in Ibiza that put Lily Allen on her path to superstardom.  At just 15, Lily lied to her parents to stay on in Ibiza after a family holiday, got herself a job, admittedly went wild and met her first manager George Lamb along the way.  A record deal followed and critically acclaimed debut album Alright Still (2006) sold 2.6 million copies and spawned huge infectious hits like Smile and LDN.  This success put Lily on the map as well as on the Pyramid stage at Glastonbury. Second album It’s Not Me It’s You chalked up the same impressive sales and now Lily Allen is back as brilliantly bold as ever with her third album Sheezus  (released 5th May). Despite her huge affiliation with Ibiza, Lily Allen has never performed on the White Isle.  This will be a seminal moment of the summer for Lily Allen and for the crowd who get to see a hugely anticipated headline show by one the UK’s most compelling stars, in the intimate courtyard stage setting of the Rocks Hotels.

Lily Allen said:  ‘I’m really looking forward to performing at Mallorca Rocks and Ibiza Rocks in June.  Ibiza was my home for a summer when I was a teenager, and I’ve always loved going there.  I’m certain that these two shows will be a highlight in my summer schedule.’

From last year’s standout set from CHIC feat. Nile Rodgers to The Specials and New Order, every year Rocks books a band that has shaped the music scene and influenced generations after them.   Back by popular demand and taking to the famous Rocks stages in Ibiza and Mallorca is Madness.  From performing their classic hits including It Must Be Love and Our House on the top of Buckingham Palace for the Queens Jubilee to performing at the closing ceremony of the Olympics, Madness are true national treasures.  The original seven piece lively line up is sure to send the Rocks crowd into a ska-fuelled frenzy in August.

Madness said: ‘We're back by public demand, voted the best Ibiza live show in 2012, the people have spoken, it would be rude not to.

At just 19, shining solo star Ella Eyre possesses the range, stage presence and charm of a woman twice her age.  The London based vocal powerhouse scored a No.1 as lead singer on Rudimentals massive Brit Award winning hit single Waiting All Night and stole the show at this years’ ceremony. Despite owning a unique voice that conjures up the greats of yesterday, Ella Eyre is very much a rising star, currently headlining her own UK tour and ready to blow away the Balearics in support of Clean Bandit in August.

Dan Croll is a name on the lips of critics, tastemakers and fans alike.  His incredibly infectious single From Knowhere spent 3 days at the top of the Hype Machine chart and provided the soundtrack for Toshibas huge tablet ad campaign.  Credible playlist support from the likes of 6 Music, XFM, Amazing Radio and Radio One fuelled the fire and live dates supporting the likes of Bastille, HAIM and London Grammar let the people see the man behind the music.  Currently on his own UK tour showcasing tracks from debut album Sweet Disarray, with one foot in folk and the other in electro-pop, Dan Croll is certain to bring something fresh to the famous Rocks stage when he supports Bombay Bicycle Club at the Ibiza Rocks Closing Party in September.

Crowned MTV’s Best of the Best UK MC’s of 2013, dynamic duo Krept and Konan are currently killing the UK underground scene. Starting off 2013 as an unsigned act, the pair made history when they released their Young Kingz album scoring a Guinness World record for the highest charting UK album by an unsigned act.  The celebrations will continue as these South London lads take to the stage in support of Tinie Tempah in July.

The Ibiza Rocks brand consistently boasts a bill crammed with the biggest international artists, best breakthrough talent and cutting edge DJs.  Summer 2014 will see the celebration of Ibiza Rocks 9th Birthday and Mallorca Rocks 4th Birthday during the 16 weeklong season of spectacular outdoor gigs under the stars.  More Rocks headline acts and W.A.R! line up announcements will follow soon.

MTV will be the exclusive broadcast partner for the second year running. The network will broadcast a number of live performances, exclusive artist interviews and all the highlights from the 16 weeklong series from the Ibiza Rocks and Mallorca Rocks Hotels this summer. Seven shows will be broadcast in total on MTV Live HD and the network’s flagship channel MTV Music including 5 x 30’ shows from Ibiza Rocks and a 1 x 30’ show from Mallorca Rocks as well as a 1 x 60’ (multi-artist) compilation show incorporating live track selection and exclusive interviews.

Nominations shortlist announced for AIM Independent Music Awards

AIM Independent Music Awards

Nominations shortlist announced for AIM Independent Music Awards

The Association of Independent Music (AIM) are excited to announce the full category shortlists for the second AIM Independent Music Awards.

Leading lights of the rock scene, Enter Shikari top the list with a total of three nominations for Best Live Act, Hardest Working Band and Independent Album of the Year, for their third album, A Flash Flood of Colour. Following closely on their heels are Alabama Shakes who are nominated for Independent Breakthrough Of The Year and Independent Album Of The Year for their critically acclaimed album, Boys and Girls. Hot from his performance at the Olympic Opening Ceremony Frank Turner picks up two nominations for Best Live Act amd Hardest Working Act and finally the Nutty Boys, Madness have clocked up nominations for PPL Award For Most Played Independent Act and the Special Catalogue Release Of The Year.

Enter Shikari said of the nominations - "Its an honour to be nominated for not one but three awards. the Independent Album of the Year and Best Live Act award nominations mean a lot to us, and the Hardest Working Band feels appropriate right now (at time of writing, we're in a jet lagged haze in Brisbane, Australia). Even if we end up walking away with no actual awards, it was nice that the independent world thought of us enough to nominate us for these coveted gongs. Bring it on."

An excited Madness said "Just when we thought we couldn't top the Jubilee and The Olympics along come two nominations from AIM to knock our socks off.”

Alongside a wealth of established mainstream talent nominated including The Prodigy, Adele and Arctic Monkeys, the AIM Independent Music Awards also feature nominations for some of the music scene’s brightest new talents, rising stars and underground heroes, including Django Django, Alt-J, Grimes, Poliça, First Aid Kit, Skinny Lister, Rustie, Liars, Future of the Left, The Invisible and Amon Tobin.

With 11 of the Awards’ categories voted for by an expert panel of judges from across the music industry and a further 3 categories voted for by the public, the Awards honour the abundance of outstanding artistic, label and entrepreneurial talent within the independent music sector. Taking place on October 29th 2012 at The Brewery in Clerkenwell, London, the ceremony will be hosted by renowned radio presenters Huw Stephens and Steve Lamacq.

CEO of AIM Alison Wenham said of the awards. “We have doubled capacity for this years ‘Most Difficult Second AIM Awards (!)’ and the nominations are once again outstanding. These awards will recognise another great year for independents’ creativity and ingenuity, with Ninja Tune and Xtra Mile leading the nominations list. The companies and artists are all so special they should all get a medal, but a decent three course meal and an evening spent amongst friends is a prize in itself.”

With Edwyn Collins and Mute’s Daniel Miller already announced as recipients of the Outstanding Contribution To Music Award and the Pioneer Award respectively, the winners for the remaining 13 categories, will be unveiled exclusively at the ceremony.

Ed Sheeran Adds Some Rizzle-Dazzle As V 2012 Goes Out With A Bang

The Stone Roses and The Killers drew the curtain on another exhilarating V Festival, sponsored by Virgin Media, with performances that had both Chelmsford and Staffordshire rocking.  Though Yorkshire born Ed Sheeran stole the show, raising the roof on the Arena in Weston Park with two unique collaborations. First up was Michael Payne singing Little Lady, shortly followed by Rizzle Kicks, who lifted the crowd to dizzy heights with a hair raising rendition of You Need Me.

Down in Chelmsford, Tinie Tempah got the Virgin Media stage crowd jumping with a performance of Pass Out and Frisky. While Snow Patrol followed shortly with a spectacular performance of their hits Chasing Cars and Run as the sun went down over the main stage.

The rain held off for day two in Weston Park as Noel Gallagher arrived on stage and lifted a ready to rock audience after seeing his beloved City win 3-2. Noel’s inspiring set was a hit with the ladies and saw him dodging bras thrown at him from the Virgin Media stage crowd.

Down South, festival goers basked in a second day of glorious sunshine as Lawson performed Maroon 5’s Move Like Jagger and The Voice breakout star, Bo Bruce, serenaded the crowds with a rendition of U2s With or Without You. While Essex’s own Olly Murs surprised fans with a special rendition of It Must Be Love when he joined his heroes Madness on stage.

Rita Ora, who took to the Arena stage in the afternoon, was looking stunning in a red fringed basque, topped off her weekend by asking the Arena crowd to help her celebrate her first number one single How we Do.

Stone Roses front man Ian Brown was in high spirits before he stepped onto the main stage to wow the crowds at their first V Festival appearance, by cruising round the VIP area and taking revelers for trips on a golf buggy.

The amazing weekend was drawn to a spectacular finale in Weston Park with a jaw dropping firework display, rounding off another incredible year in V Festival’s 17-year history.

Early Bird tickets for V Festival 2013 go on sale on Wednesday 22nd August from 9am, for a limited period of time. The Selecter feat Pauline Black - Announce March UK 'Made In Britain' tour

The Selecter feat Pauline Black - Announce March UK Made In Britain tour

Seminal 2-tone band The Selecter have announced an extensive UK tour to celebrate the release of their critically acclaimed 2011 album, Made In Britain. Touring throughout March 2012, this most vital and visceral of British bands will bring their infectious musical message of multiculturalism and hope to towns and cities up and down the country.

The Selecter pioneered the ska revival movement alongside labelmates, The Specials & Madness, and were responsible for some of the scenes classic hits, including On My Radio, Three Minute Hero, Missing Words & Too Much Pressure.

The Selecters iconic frontwoman Pauline Black is reverently referred to as the First Rudegirl of Ska  and with good reason, with Rolling Stone Magazine declaring, Hands down, Pauline Black possessed the best voice that ever graced a 2-Tone release and Gwen Stefani citing her as one of her formative influences.

In 2010, Black reunited with the bands co-singer, the brilliantly charismatic Gaps Hendrickson known for his incisive toasting on the mic, to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of their classic Too Much Pressure. Since then, this refreshed and revitalised line-up have been the recipients of a wave of critical and popular acclaim for both their brilliant 2011 album, Made In Britain, and their incendiary live performances.

Made In Britain explores the multicultural landscape of today's Britain & beyond. Mixing ska, pop and reggae in their inimitable style, it reflects the social and political issues confronting Britains new multicultural society in 2011. Just as they gave a voice to disaffected youth across the racial divide in Thatchers recessionary Britain thirty years ago, The Selecter have returned to a 21st Century British landscape with an unnerving number of parallels to those dark times.

The 2-tone legacy continues because the idea of multiculturalism began when black and white youth, who had grown up in Britain decided to get together and make music that reflected their particular world. Made In Britain seeks to continue that conversation and carry their Multiculturalism rules! message forward to a new generation.
