Chester Rocks 2012 will take place 16th-17th June at Chester Racecourse. Acts have now been announced, headlining on Saturday 16th will be, The CoUrteeners and on Sunday 17th, Pixie Lott.

The Courteeners were formed by front man Liam Fray following his success playing acoustic sets as a singer-songwriter around bars in Manchester whilst a student.

The band had their first gig at the Manchester Roadhouse in 2006, and quickly went from strength to strength. They released their debut single "Cavorting" in 2007 and in 2008 the band set off on a sellout tour of major venues across the UK. ‘All About Tonight’ from her second album was released in September 2011 and premiered at number 1. Pixie made her debut on the festival circuit at the Big Top at the Isle of Wight Festival in 2009, since then she is now renowned for her live performances.

Katy B will also feature as a special guest on Sunday 17th June along with Maverick Sabre, Labrinth and Tinchy Stryder.

This is Chester Rock’s second year, last year saw over 15,000 people walk through the gates, this year with The Courteeners and Pixie Lott headlining, this figure is expected to increase significantly.

Chester Rocks 2011 Review - Sunday

Day 2 and time for rock legends and dance legends to grace the main stage along with a legend in his own right, Mr Shaun William Ryder. It was also a day of a lot of walking for us at musicmafiauk due to the sheer amount of talent available on both the main stage and Dawson's stage.

Starting the day off was Tommy Scott, ex lead singer from Liverpool 90's band Space, who sported a rocker billy look for his set, followed by The Lightening Seeds.

Now the day really kicked off with it's Sunday rocked fuelled extravaganza, with Feeder playing a full on rock set with hits including, "Feeling The Moment", "Renegades" and "Buck Rogers" which saw the crowd in full on bounce mode and cheering along in definite approval to the instrumental part. I have to admit I had forgotten just how much I loved Feeder and
can honestly say that it has now been rekindled and cannot wait for their new album which they've been working hard on in the studio.

After that I was all set for more of this genre, so headed over to the Dawson Stage, which was thankfully a lot more busy today. In there we found The Suzuki's blasting the place out. To look at them you them you would expect an Oasis maybe Stone Roses laid back indie set, but oh no, with powerful rasping vocals and a cheeky glint in the eye from front man, Chris Veasy and bass player, Robert Warnes fingers moving faster than the speed of light, this rock outfit are already making a name for themselves in the music world and provided the Dawson stage with a performance worthy of the main stage.

Back at the main stage, Mancunian and Jungle legend, Shaun William Ryder, as he's now apparently known as, came onto stage looking like he was going sailing with his jaunty lil cap on and glass of wine!!! I always had him down as a lager man. With his first mischievous words of, "we'll have to keep it clean, there's kids in the crowd", you knew this ex Happy Mondays front man was on fine form. Joined on stage with his band and backing singer Jill, he performed hits from his pretty large back catalogue and the crowd just lapped it up, dancing early 90's style along to, "Kinky Afro" and "Step On" to name but a few.

The Australian Pink Floyd, provided a great set both musically and visually and the older generation there absolutely adored them, presumably being taken back to their youth of the original Floyd, unfortunately for me, they have always produced a very sleepy effect for me and I spent the next half hour trying to stay awake, great for insomnia though!!

Then the moment we had all been waiting for, although we were expecting him to headline, the godfather of punk/rock, Iggy Pop roared onto the stage with massive cheering from the crowd, (which the sound guy had instigated by waving his hand up, yep i noticed it, although why he felt that was needed i don't know). From the very beginning we saw Iggy bounce, twist, jump, turn all in just leather pants and boots. With tongue pulling and waving at the crowd, Iggy Pop was on tremendous form and rocked the place to it's very core. Half way through the set he addressed the crowd, "Hello my fellow Chestertons, we are the fucking Stooges!" and then proceeded to invite the entire crowd onto stage, pretty soon the stage was full of kids and teenagers and a few older rock chicks jumping and head banging away on stage. A moment these youngsters will never forget and will have a lot of jealous friends come school on Monday. With Iggy barely able to stay on the stage, jumping into the photo pit, thankfully photographers had all gone to safety, singing to individuals, trying on their various hats, this legend showed why he has this godfather status and long may he have it after this performance, a true legend in his own very individual right. I just wish he had played, "Lust For Life!"

After Iggy's performance, about half the crowd dispersed never to return, even though Leftfield were due on, who gave a great set with all their most famous dance tracks but we were off to see Liverpool's very own, much loved, Fly With Vampires. This young band have been going for a few years now and never fail to impress and deliver a show laden with character, true talent and one hell of a formidable bass player. With tracks like, "Not Wasted On The Young" and "Waves" a military beat induced track about a hand movement apparently, FWV always put there all into every gig and the audience loved it, especially one zealous fan who danced for the entire set with a look of sheer happiness on his face.

So for us this was the end of a fabulous weekend and it was a great way to end it on. Thanks FWV!!
And congratulations to Chester Rocks for your 1st year into the music venture and here's too many more like it.

Chester Rocks 2011 review Saturday

The first Chester Rocks is finally here. Held at Chester's racecourse, this two day event has catered for a lot of musical tastes, and hasn't just gone with mainstream pop acts, but also some big named rock and dance acts. Also thanks to Dawson's, some of the best unsigned acts out there, many of which hail form Liverpool.

Saturday heralded the bubble gum pop day at the main stage for all those chart loving tweenagers, teenagers and mum's who all seem to have a rather large obsession with the latest boyband "phenomenon" The Wanted, which saw the afore mentioned reduced to squealing messes at the very mention of their name, who knows what will happen when they actually get on stage!!

With the sun shining down upon us for the entire day, Chester Rocks was kicked off by Stephen Langstaff, a singer/songwriter from Liverpool who produced a neat little performance with laid back tunes and a great voice. Next up was, 80's band The Christians, who performed firm favourites, "Ideal World", "Hooverville" and "Forgotten Town".

They were followed by Eliza Doolittle, who performed a fantastic bounce along set in her eclectic style we have become to recognise her for. The crowd loved it and each song was received with huge applause. She was followed by leather clad, The Sugababes, who after a slightly shaky vocal start to, "Freak Like Me" pulled it back and produced a very slick set with Heidi's vocals powering across the arena.

After all this pop it was time to head to the Dawson stage. (which should be signposted or not hidden away, people need to be able to find it to discover the talents hidden inside by the way). We found The Kevin Critchley Outfit on stage who comprised of 6 members, 3 violins, one guitar, keyboard and cello. I have to admit they were not what I expected. With a slight element of folk and lashings of heavy Spanish guitar this band are one to check out if you're looking for something a little bit different.

And back to "pop heaven" for The Saturdays, who gave their usual performance, which mainly includes thrusting your butt backwards and forwards, then gyrate your hips a bit and add a few lyrics for good measure. With mediocre vocals, I'm just thankful they didn't pull out that damn acoustic guitar again.

Finally, the moment every young girl in the crowd had been waiting for, with flags flying, banners billowing all declaring their undying love for various members of the group, The Wanted took to the stage to a mass eruption of screams, squeals and probably a fair few hysterical tears as well from this young crowd, especially from the five girls chosen to join their heroes on stage, then with a quick dash were back to Dawsons stage to see Elsie, who even the BBC have promoted for this event. Think Gwen Stefani looks with Blondie style music and you've got it in one. With catchy lyrics that hold no bars, she could very well be one of those next big things.

Next up were my new favourite unsigned band, Strawhouses, who just to clarify, are NOT a folk band. They gave yet another flawless set and hopefully sold even more of their £1 albums, I advise you invest in one guys.

Finale of the night, Taio Cruz, delivered a sleek set with his mellow voice and R&B style music floating across the racecourse as the sun finally set. With a fabulous stage presence and performing his many hits, he definitely offers a lot more than his contemporaries and was an excellent choice to end the day one of Chester Rocks.

Elsie announces home-coming gig at Chester Rocks

Little Sutton singer  Elsie (pronounced L-C as in Laura Critchley) will be headlining the Dawsons-Farida Guitars stage at Chester Rocks on Saturday 2nd July. The second stage will also feature up and coming bands from the area and festival organisers will be announcing the winners of the local band search shortly.  Fellow Little Sutton singer Ian Prowse and his band Amsterdam will be headlining the second stage on the Sunday.

Elsie is about to unleash her brand new Blondie-inspired sound at a special homecoming gig at Chester Rocks “I was born in Chester and born to rock so being asked to headline at Chester Rocks is an absolute honour. I can’t wait to come home! I’m gonna rock it like a Roman rock godess.”

The Chester-born singer who now lives in London, has spent the last year dividing her time between recording her album with the Stereophonics’ producer and touring the world as Tom Jones’ lead vocalist.

Her dancefloor-friendly, live-band-driven album follows the fortunes of a small town girl who heads off for the bright lights of the big city.

Over catchy riffs and Discorock bass lines, Elsie sings about bad men, broken hearts, naughty nights out and those girls you just can’t trust.

In the few moments of time Elsie's had away from gigging and recording, she's visited the troops in Iraq and worked with homeless dog charities The Mayhew Animal Home and The Dogs Trust.

Local stars Amsterdam sign up to Chester Rocks

Local heroes Amsterdam will be headlining the Dawsons-Bido Lito! stage at Chester Rocks on Sunday 3rd July 2011. The second stage will also feature up and coming bands from the area as festival organisers will be announcing the winners of the local band search in coming weeks.

The new two day outdoor music festival will take place at the famous Chester Racecourse on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd July. The line- up has something for everyone, with artists ranging from punk legends Iggy Pop and The Stooges to the hottest boyband on the planet The Wanted.

Chester Rocks is all about the music but don't forget there will be fairgrounds, performers and trade stands; it’s going to be a great family day out.

Amsterdam frontman Ian Prowse from Ellesmere Port, has formed two successful bands Amsterdam and Pele. Ian is the engine room behind Amsterdam but also enjoyed previous success in the 1990's with his band Pele who recorded three albums for Polydor and even had a number one hit in South Africa. “'We really can't wait to sock it to Chester, without a doubt this has to be the best setting for any festival in the country” said Ian.

Amsterdam are a seven-piece riotous ensemble who have spent the year working on their new album as well as playing Pele's first album Fireworks in full to live audiences across the UK. “We promise to play all the best loved Pele tunes at Chester Rocks” adds Ian.

The last couple of years have been good to Amsterdam. The band performed a duet with Elvis Costello for EMI Records, stormed Glastonbury, supported The Pogues at the Liverpool Echo Arena and the single, The Journey, hit number 32 in the UK charts. Whilst the album Arm in Arm album was voted 14th best ever album out of Liverpool by the local press, which when you consider the Beatles released ten is some mean feat!

John Peels’ second favourite tune was Ian's most famous hit song, Does this train stop on Merseyside? John would regularly be too emotional to speak on the radio after playing it.

Ian sang the track at the launch of the John Peel train in Liverpool, it was an emotional performance in front of John’s family and widow Shelia. Amsterdam have also performed the song four times for Janice Long on her BBC 2 show.

The song itself got a further lease of life as one of the centre pieces of Irish legend Christy Moores’ latest album which spent five weeks at the top spot in his home country
Amsterdam's Springsteen-esque live show has earned them a high profile fan club from the likes of Mick Jones, Bob Harris, Elvis Costello and Miles Hunt. Watch out Chester!
