Professor Penguin album review - Planes

Professor Penguin’s first two singles ‘Pilot’ and ‘Pirate’ have already seen the band win support from The Fly, Q Magazine’s “Track Of The Day”, BBC Radio 1 (Rob Da Bank and Nick Grimshaw), BBC 6Music (Lauren Laverne, Radcliffe and  Maconie, Steve Lamacq, Gideon Coe and Tom Robinson), BBC London (Gary Crowley) and XFM where ‘Pilot’ was play listed as the “Xposure Big One”.
The band have even picked up Brian Eno as a fan, who described their debut single ‘Pilot’ as “a beautiful piece” and took the track in to air on BBC 6Music during an appearance on Radcliffe and Maconie’s show.
 

Professor Penguin certainly like the letter P. Not only is there name made up of P's but each track on the album begins with a P. Maybe this was to freak me out or there is some subliminal message hidden in there. Anyway...the album as a whole is a light, breezy affair. Mellow and laid back and perfect for the summer. Listening to it you can almost imagine yourself on a beach, lazing back listening to the lapping of the waves. Beautiful and melodic and a use of many different styles and incorporating many different instruments into the mix. The only negative I have is that at times the songs can seem to blend into one when listening to the whole album in one sitting but on an individual basis they work and there is definitely an individuality to the songs.
If you like artists such as Just Jack or Jack Johnston you will probably love this album. Lay back, grab a drink of choice and chill out to Professor Penguin.

Next up is a stunning show, featuring two of the most exciting and critically acclaimed male solo stars to come out of the UK - singer songwriter Maverick Sabre and producer-turned-pop-star Labrinth. Since supporting Tinie Tempah at Rocks last year, Maverick Sabre’s success has soared with debut album Lonely Are The Brave going gold and reaching No.2. In 2005 Ibiza Rocks captured the Kaiser Chiefs for one of the first ever Ibiza Rocks gigs, just before their debut album Employment exploded. Six million album sales later and with a worldwide reputation as a mind-blowing live act that wow festival audiences the world over, Kaiser Chiefs are back in a BIG way with new album The Future Is Medieval – their fourth Top 10 album in six years. They make a welcome return to Ibiza Rocks, where

they’ve gone with the brand from the back room of the club, to the intimate beach bar to the famous stage at the ‘Rocks’ Hotels.

Kasabian are certainly on fire right now, with their fourth studio album Velociraptor taking the group to stratospheric new levels and winning the accolade of ‘Best Band’ at this years’ NME Awards. Kasabian first played Ibiza Rocks in 2006 (Bar M) and returned for a two night residency in 2007. Kasabian are an incendiary live act who consistently tops the polls of fans’ favourite festival headliners. Now the Leicester lads make their hugely anticipated return to head up the two biggest parties in the Balearics - in celebration of Mallorca Rocks 2nd birthday and Ibiza Rocks 7th birthday in July.

Professor Green is one of the hottest talents in the UK music scene right now. The acclaimed rapper’s second album At Your Inconvenience spawned the massive No.1 hit Read All About It. With an MTV Europe Music Award, a MOBO and an NME Award under his belt, Professor Green makes a triumphant return for these Spanish exclusive shows, following his phenomenal headline debut in 2011. DJ Fresh presents FRESH/LIVE joins him on the bill and as the man behind two of the biggest tracks of the past year, No.1 hit singles Louder and Hot Right Now, he certainly is the hot on the block right now and will be equally so in the Balearics.

Hailed by many as the most exciting producers in the UK today, Chase & Status are the biggest crossover act to come out of the underground in years. Their last two ‘Rocks’ shows have been total roadblocks when these boys brought their live show to town in 2010 and 2011. Having sold in excess of 500K albums, they return to the Balearics as bonifide superstars for standout shows in Mallorca and Ibiza in July.

Tinie Tempah is one of Britain’s biggest stars. Since debut album Disc-Overy hit No. 1, preceded by hit No.1 singles Pass Out and Written in the Stars, the sensational solo star has become one of the most award-winning, best-selling performers of recent times.

With Kylie Minogue dancing to his set on the balcony and the fans going nuts all round him last year, Tinie Tempah’s gig was the talk of the town as he teased the ‘Rocks’ crowd to ecstatic proportions. Due to mass public demand, he’ll be doing it again in August.

This is an amazing time for Example. Third album Playing in the Shadows debuted at No.1 and delivered two No.1 singles, Changed the Way You Kissed Me and Stay Awake. Infact, Stay Awake produced by Nero is about waking up at Ibiza Rocks and seeing hundreds of kids still going from the night before. Example strutted his stuff as a support act in 2009 and 2010 before absolutely killing it during his own headline shows at ‘Rocks’ in 2011.

Bloc Party are back and are set to make their ‘Rocks’ debut as part of their hugely anticipated return to the live scene. Ibiza Rocks was born out of a concept to create a night for dance kids who wanted to rock and rock kids who wanted to dance. The East London art rockers, fronted by Kele Okereke, are the very essence of that. This gig has been a long time coming for team ‘Rocks’and it’s a huge honour to be bringing one of the bands that influenced the brand, Bloc Party, to the Balearics for the very first time.

The newly reformed New Order are back together and will make their massive debut at Mallorca Rocks and Ibiza Rocks in September. One of the most highly influential and critically acclaimed bands of the 1980’s, New Order were the pioneering force behind electronic music, largely responsible for the opening the world famous Hacienda Club in Manchester in 1982 and for 1983 hit Blue Monday, the best-selling 12 inch single of all time. Their 5th album Technique (1989) was partly recorded in Ibiza and perfectly encapsulates Balearic beats and acid house influences into their electro/rock sound. They have influenced generations of hit making

musicians the world over and are one of the most in demand on the festival circuit this summer. It will be a proud moment when they take centre stage for these unmissable sets under the Balaeric stars in September.

Northern Irish trio Two Door Cinema Club have rapidly become one of the biggest new success stories across the globe and just finished up their headline slot of the NME Awards Tour. They are a huge hit with the ‘Rocks’ audience and what a way to celebrate another amazing year as they bring Mallorca Rocks and Ibiza Rocks 2012 to an almighty close in September (18th & 19th).

Liverpool Sound City, the 3 day international music, media and technology conference and live arts and music festival returns in May with another bold and innovative music programme and forward thinking conference. With Professor Green, White Denim and Death In Vegas announced as the first wave of artists, the 5^th Liverpool Sound city is well on the way delivering its finest line up yet.  Announced today are a host of new artists who represent all that is pioneering and captivating in contemporary music.

Michael Kiwanuka was the winner of the BBC’s esteemed Sound Of 2012 poll, judged by all the key players in the music industry.  Signed to the Mumford and Son’s endorsed Communion Records, Michael Kiwanuka has toured with Laura Marlin and Adele and performs the bluesy, soulful, folk from his ‘Home Again’ album.  Mystery Jets release their 4^th studio album in April and continue their slow burn ascendancy with quirky pop and harmony splashed tunes that are big and vibrant.  

Alkaline Trio are a huge draw with a young, frenzied following.  Their turbo charged anthems are a potent mix of uplifting punk melodies and decidedly dark lyrics.  Slow Club‘s saccharine folk-pop and heart bursting songs are sure to be a festival highlight as are Willy Mason’s facetious anecdotes and colourful yarns.  A must see is Ghost Poet who made the shortlist for the 2011 Mercury Music Prize.  So won over was Gilles Peterson by his hypnotic lullabies that he signed him to his Brownswood Recordings label. 

Alt- J have been tipped by everyone as an act to watch in 2012 and make the short trip across the Pennines to Liverpool from Leeds whilst from further afield, Sound City is delighted to welcome Australian indie darlings, The Jezabels.  Two other acts who have been making a stir on the music scene of late are Swedish duo Niki and the Dove who make goth tinged electro-pop and The Horrors endorsed Toy whose music is inspired by the speedy garage psychedelica of the late 60’s and German art rock of the early 70’s.

Acclaimed as the most influential live music platform for new and emerging artists, Liverpool Sound City will also play host to Forest Swords, The History of Apple Pie, Bear In Heaven, Folks, The Computers, Still Flyin', Jonquil, Shields, Towns, PINS and Bleached.

Uniquely for a city centre festival, Liverpool Sound City does not just showcase acts in traditional venues and this year performances will take place in warehouses, bombed out churches and a range of other locations giving fans a once in a lifetime chance to see bands in such captivating surroundings.

Earlier this year the Sound City team announced the first of a number of international shows in 2012 and they can confirm that Dutch Uncles have been added to the bill for New York Sound City on 12^th March, supporting The La’s who play their first show in ‘The Big Apple’ in 20 years.  Dutch Uncles are one of the bands at the fore-front of Manchester’s vibrant new music scene and their unmistakable brand of prog pop has had the critics tipping them for success.  Poland’s finest act, Paula and Karol have also been confirmed for the show having gained numerous accolades in their home country and having been highlighted by the Guardian in their ‘Sound Of 2011 Around The World’ poll.

Professor Green, Wretch 32 added to V Festival line-up

Contary to popular belief Dolly Parton the queen of country music has not been added to this years V Festival line up.

But Professor Green,Labrinth, Chiddy Bang and Wretch 32 have been announced to add to a bill that already has Eminem and Plan B and Rhianna on it.

Tickets were priced at £175 for a weekend pass with camping, and £149 weekend pass without camping. A day ticket was priced at £83.50, and a campervan pass is priced at £99. Only VIP Luxury packages are still available.
