Professor Penguin album review - Planes

Professor Penguin

Professor Penguin album review - Planes

Professor Penguin’s first two singles ‘Pilot’ and ‘Pirate’ have already seen the band win support from The Fly, Q Magazine’s “Track Of The Day”, BBC Radio 1 (Rob Da Bank and Nick Grimshaw), BBC 6Music (Lauren Laverne, Radcliffe and  Maconie, Steve Lamacq, Gideon Coe and Tom Robinson), BBC London (Gary Crowley) and XFM where ‘Pilot’ was play listed as the “Xposure Big One”.
The band have even picked up Brian Eno as a fan, who described their debut single ‘Pilot’ as “a beautiful piece” and took the track in to air on BBC 6Music during an appearance on Radcliffe and Maconie’s show.

Professor Penguin certainly like the letter P. Not only is there name made up of P's but each track on the album begins with a P. Maybe this was to freak me out or there is some subliminal message hidden in there. Anyway...the album as a whole is a light, breezy affair. Mellow and laid back and perfect for the summer. Listening to it you can almost imagine yourself on a beach, lazing back listening to the lapping of the waves. Beautiful and melodic and a use of many different styles and incorporating many different instruments into the mix. The only negative I have is that at times the songs can seem to blend into one when listening to the whole album in one sitting but on an individual basis they work and there is definitely an individuality to the songs.
If you like artists such as Just Jack or Jack Johnston you will probably love this album. Lay back, grab a drink of choice and chill out to Professor Penguin.

AND THE UK’S NO.1 TASTEMAKER ZANE LOWE RETURNS AS MUSICAL DIRECTOR

"New Order and Ibiza are forever entwined. There's no going back so instead we look forward -to playing our first ever concert onthe island at Ibiza Rocks." - BERNARD SUMNER, New Order

Ibiza Rocks is back with its most exciting bill to date; a truly incredible array of the most in-demand festival headliners and best breakthrough artists will take over the Balearics during the 16 week-long, sun-drenched series of open-air gigs at Mallorca Rocks and Ibiza Rocks, opening with Ed Sheeran in June, closing with Two Door Cinema Club in September and crammed with OUTSTANDING talent in between including Kasabian, New Order, Bloc Party, Tinie Tempah, Example, Kaiser Chiefs, Chase & Status, Professor Green, Maverick Sabre, Labrinth, DJ Fresh presents FRESH/LIVE and Azealia Banks.

Since previously announcing Ed Sheeran for the Mallorca Rocks and Ibiza Rocks opening parties, he’s won two BRITs (British Breakthrough Act and British Solo Male) and his star keeps shining brighter as anticipation builds further for the moment he plays Mallorca Rocks and Ibiza Rocks opening parties in June (5th & 6th).

Next up is a stunning show, featuring two of the most exciting and critically acclaimed male solo stars to come out of the UK - singer songwriter Maverick Sabre and producer-turned-pop-star Labrinth. Since supporting Tinie Tempah at Rocks last year, Maverick Sabre’s success has soared with debut album Lonely Are The Brave going gold and reaching No.2. It’s been an equally good year for Labrinth since supporting Chase & Status last year then smashing the singles chart with No.2 hit Earthquake. Ibiza Rocks has
consistently nurtured new talent and provided a platform for breaking artists to play the biggest bill in the Balearics. In June, fans will see two of last year’s strongest support artists deservedly step up to headline slot status in June.

In 2005 Ibiza Rocks captured the Kaiser Chiefs for one of the first ever Ibiza Rocks gigs, just before their debut album Employment exploded. They returned for a phenomenal, intimate beachfront gig at Bar M in 2007. Six million album sales later and with a worldwide reputation as a mind-blowing live act that wow festival audiences the world over, Kaiser Chiefs are back in a BIG way with new album The Future Is Medieval – their fourth Top 10 album in six years. They make a welcome return to Ibiza Rocks, where
they’ve gone with the brand from the back room of the club, to the intimate beach bar to the famous stage at the ‘Rocks’ Hotels.

Peanut, Kaiser Chiefs said: “We’ve done Ibiza Rocks a couple of times before, and it’s great because everyone’s on holiday. We did it back in 2005 and Ricky jumped into the crowd. When you’re in Ibiza, it seems like more of a relaxing time compared to other gigs.”

Kasabian are certainly on fire right now, with their fourth studio album Velociraptor taking the group to stratospheric new levels and winning the accolade of ‘Best Band’ at this years’ NME Awards. Kasabian first played Ibiza Rocks in 2006 (Bar M) and returned for a two night residency in 2007. Kasabian are an incendiary live act who consistently tops the polls of fans’ favourite festival headliners. Now the Leicester lads make their hugely anticipated return to head up the two biggest parties in the Balearics - in celebration of Mallorca Rocks 2nd birthday and Ibiza Rocks 7th birthday in July.

Professor Green is one of the hottest talents in the UK music scene right now. The acclaimed rapper’s second album At Your Inconvenience spawned the massive No.1 hit Read All About It. With an MTV Europe Music Award, a MOBO and an NME Award under his belt, Professor Green makes a triumphant return for these Spanish exclusive shows, following his phenomenal headline debut in 2011. DJ Fresh presents FRESH/LIVE joins him on the bill and as the man behind two of the biggest tracks of the past year, No.1 hit singles Louder and Hot Right Now, he certainly is the hot on the block right now and will be equally so in the Balearics.

Hailed by many as the most exciting producers in the UK today, Chase & Status are the biggest crossover act to come out of the underground in years. Their last two ‘Rocks’ shows have been total roadblocks when these boys brought their live show to town in 2010 and 2011. Having sold in excess of 500K albums, they return to the Balearics as bonifide superstars for standout shows in Mallorca and Ibiza in July.

Chase & Status said: “Can't wait to bring our live show over to the White Isle gain this summer. We love Ibiza and are looking forward to playing Ibiza and Mallorca Rocks again this year.”

Tinie Tempah is one of Britain’s biggest stars. Since debut album Disc-Overy hit No. 1, preceded by hit No.1 singles Pass Out and Written in the Stars, the sensational solo star has become one of the most award-winning, best-selling performers of recent times.
With Kylie Minogue dancing to his set on the balcony and the fans going nuts all round him last year, Tinie Tempah’s gig was the talk of the town as he teased the ‘Rocks’ crowd to ecstatic proportions. Due to mass public demand, he’ll be doing it again in August.

This is an amazing time for Example. Third album Playing in the Shadows debuted at No.1 and delivered two No.1 singles, Changed the Way You Kissed Me and Stay Awake. Infact, Stay Awake produced by Nero is about waking up at Ibiza Rocks and seeing hundreds of kids still going from the night before. Example strutted his stuff as a support act in 2009 and 2010 before absolutely killing it during his own headline shows at ‘Rocks’ in 2011.

Bloc Party are back and are set to make their ‘Rocks’ debut as part of their hugely anticipated return to the live scene. Ibiza Rocks was born out of a concept to create a night for dance kids who wanted to rock and rock kids who wanted to dance. The East London art rockers, fronted by Kele Okereke, are the very essence of that. This gig has been a long time coming for team ‘Rocks’and it’s a huge honour to be bringing one of the bands that influenced the brand, Bloc Party, to the Balearics for the very first time.

The newly reformed New Order are back together and will make their massive debut at Mallorca Rocks and Ibiza Rocks in September. One of the most highly influential and critically acclaimed bands of the 1980’s, New Order were the pioneering force behind electronic music, largely responsible for the opening the world famous Hacienda Club in Manchester in 1982 and for 1983 hit Blue Monday, the best-selling 12 inch single of all time. Their 5th album Technique (1989) was partly recorded in Ibiza and perfectly encapsulates Balearic beats and acid house influences into their electro/rock sound. They have influenced generations of hit making
musicians the world over and are one of the most in demand on the festival circuit this summer. It will be a proud moment when they take centre stage for these unmissable sets under the Balaeric stars in September.

Bernard Sumner, New Order says "The last time New Order were in Ibiza was the second summer of love. We were there to record an album and didn't really know what we were walking into. By the time we left a few months later New Order, the Happy Mondays and the Hacienda had collided and fused with the Balearics and Ibiza's superclubs. Manchester had become 'Madchester', and dance music had made a quantum leap. Although we didn't spend much time in the studio we left with the basis of our album
Technique. New Order and Ibiza are forever entwined. There's no going back so instead we look forward -to playing our first ever concert on the island at Ibiza Rocks."

Northern Irish trio Two Door Cinema Club have rapidly become one of the biggest new success stories across the globe and just finished up their headline slot of the NME Awards Tour. They are a huge hit with the ‘Rocks’ audience and what a way to celebrate another amazing year as they bring Mallorca Rocks and Ibiza Rocks 2012 to an almighty close in September (18th & 19th).

Zane Lowe, Musical Director, Ibiza Rocks Group said: "It’s the best line up yet! It's great to have Ibiza Rocks originals like Kasabian and the Kaisers back this year along with the biggest new artists in the world like Ed Sheeran and Tinie Tempah. And this year will be the first ever Ibiza Rocks show from Bloc Party. Best. Line up. Yet!"

Shane Murray, Ibiza Rocks Group promoter, said: "This is the biggest year for the Ibiza Rocks brand yet and we're genuinely excited to be bringing 16 weeks of phenomenal live gigs to the islands. New Order have had such an influence on Ibiza and we're making history by putting on their first ever live gig here. Bloc Party will be another real moment of the summer - this show has been a long time coming! It's such an incredibly exciting time in music right now and with acts like Ed Sheeran, Two Door Cinema Club, Kasabian and Chase & Status all on the bill, the 2012 Rocks line up really reflects that. The energy at our shows is unique and with a line up as strong as this, it's going to go up a whole other level. See you on the islands!"

Resident DJ’s Doorly, Nicola Bear and Colin Peters will also be back behind the decks for 2012.

The Ibiza Rocks brand consistently boasts a bill crammed with the biggest international artists and breakthrough talent live under the Balearic stars and offers a choice of quality accommodation options in Mallorca and Ibiza at exceptional value. Summer 2012 will see 32 ‘Rocks’ gigs across 16 consecutive weeks. Mallorca Rocks every Tuesday from 05 June – 18 September. Ibiza Rocks every Wednesday from 06 June to 19 September.

Liverpool Sound City announce next wave of artists

Liverpool Sound City 2012 announce next wave of artists

BBC Sound Of 2012 winner Michael Kiwanuka joins Professor Green, White Denim and Death In Vegas for annual Sound City spectacular

Mystery Jets, Alkaline Trio, Slow Club, Willy Mason, Ghost Poet, The Jezabels, (ALT-J), Niki and the Dove, Toy and more artists confirmed

Early Bird Sound City wristbands and delegate passes run out at midday on 27th February.  Get your tickets now

Dutch Uncles and Poland’s finest Paula and Karol added to inaugural New York Sound City event in March, headlined by The La’s playing their first New York show in 20 Years.

Tickets almost sold out for New York Sound City.  Last few available for the conference.

Liverpool Sound City, the 3 day international music, media and technology conference and live arts and music festival returns in May with another bold and innovative music programme and forward thinking conference. With Professor Green, White Denim and Death In Vegas announced as the first wave of artists, the 5th Liverpool Sound city is well on the way delivering its finest line up yet.  Announced today are a host of new artists who represent all that is pioneering and captivating in contemporary music.

Michael Kiwanuka was the winner of the BBC’s esteemed Sound Of 2012 poll, judged by all the key players in the music industry.  Signed to the Mumford and Son’s endorsed Communion Records, Michael Kiwanuka has toured with Laura Marlin and Adele and performs the bluesy, soulful, folk from his ‘Home Again’ album.  Mystery Jets release their 4th studio album in April and continue their slow burn ascendancy with quirky pop and harmony splashed tunes that are big and vibrant.

Alkaline Trio are a huge draw with a young, frenzied following.  Their turbo charged anthems are a potent mix of uplifting punk melodies and decidedly dark lyrics.  Slow Club‘s saccharine folk-pop and heart bursting songs are sure to be a festival highlight as are Willy Mason’s facetious anecdotes and colourful yarns.  A must see is Ghost Poet who made the shortlist for the 2011 Mercury Music Prize.  So won over was Gilles Peterson by his hypnotic lullabies that he signed him to his Brownswood Recordings label.

Alt- J have been tipped by everyone as an act to watch in 2012 and make the short trip across the Pennines to Liverpool from Leeds whilst from further afield, Sound City is delighted to welcome Australian indie darlings, The Jezabels.  Two other acts who have been making a stir on the music scene of late are Swedish duo Niki and the Dove who make goth tinged electro-pop and The Horrors endorsed Toy whose music is inspired by the speedy garage psychedelica of the late 60’s and German art rock of the early 70’s.

Acclaimed as the most influential live music platform for new and emerging artists, Liverpool Sound City will also play host to Forest Swords, The History of Apple Pie, Bear In Heaven, Folks, The Computers, Still Flyin', Jonquil, Shields, Towns, PINS and Bleached.

Uniquely for a city centre festival, Liverpool Sound City does not just showcase acts in traditional venues and this year performances will take place in warehouses, bombed out churches and a range of other locations giving fans a once in a lifetime chance to see bands in such captivating surroundings.

One of the key new additions to the Sound City event will be Sound City Expo, an event that brings together the newest and most forward thinking exhibitors to the Echo Arena, providing access for both consumers and music/digital professionals to the people, tools and services they will need as we move ever onwards in the digital age.  Sound City Expo will focus on the current and future intersection of music, art, business and technology - giving a real insight into what is possible in the modern age.

Earlier this year the Sound City team announced the first of a number of international shows in 2012 and they can confirm that Dutch Uncles have been added to the bill for New York Sound City on 12th March, supporting The La’s who play their first show in ‘The Big Apple’ in 20 years.  Dutch Uncles are one of the bands at the fore-front of Manchester’s vibrant new music scene and their unmistakable brand of prog pop has had the critics tipping them for success.  Poland’s finest act, Paula and Karol have also been confirmed for the show having gained numerous accolades in their home country and having been highlighted by the Guardian in their ‘Sound Of 2011 Around The World’ poll.

Liverpool Sound City continues to focus on the future, intent on bringing the best new music, film, art and more from all over the world to Liverpool.  With the inaugural New York Sound City show taking place in March and further international shows to be announced, this is an incredibly exciting time for Sound City

Early Bird Tickets are still on sale at the following prices.

Sound City Live Festival Wristband - £25
Sound City Delegate Pass - £90

The Early Bird price will run out at midday on 27th February so early booking is advised.

LIVERPOOL SOUND CITY TO HOST UK MUSIC STUDENT AWARDS

FIRST EVER LIVERPOOL SOUND CITY EXPO ANNOUNCED

EARLY BIRD TICKETS AND DELEGATE PASSES ON SALE UNITL
MIDDAY 6TH FEBRUARY

Liverpool Sound City, the 3 day international music, media and technology conference
and live arts and music festival returns in May with another compelling line up.
Acclaimed for its bold and innovative programming and forward thinking conference,
Liverpool Sound City is focused on the future, intent on bringing the best new music,
film, art and more from all over the world to Liverpool. With the inaugural New York
Sound City show taking place in March and further international shows to be announced, this is an incredibly exciting time for Sound City.

Liverpool Sound City is thrilled to announce Professor Green as one of their
headliners. His debut album, ‘Alive Till I’m Dead’ crashed into the charts last year and went double-Gold, spawning four hit singles, singles with ‘I Need You Tonight’, ‘Just Be Good To Green’, ‘Monster’ and 'Jungle' amassing over 500,000 sales. The size of his army of Facebook friends – 1.3 million – tells it like it is: Professor Green is head and shoulders above any of his peers. His second album is due for release this summer and he will be premiering tracks from it at Liverpool Sound City.

Professor Green say’s "Liverpool is always a highlight of any tour so I'm delighted to be able to confirm Liverpool Sound City. I can't wait to get back there. Liverpool! Let’s have it!"

White Denim, the Texas four piece who blend garage, progressive and psychedelic rock
and are hugely lauded for their blistering live sets will perform tracks from their five revered and varied long players.

Also performing are psychedelic electronic innovators, Death In Vegas, playing tracks
from their ‘Trans Love Energies’ album. The record marks a return to their roots in
minimal techno, deploying the rudimentary gear behind all the classics of the original Detroit / Chicago era to try and spirit up fresh atmospheres.

Cloud Nothings, Yukon Blonde, Charli XCX, and Fixers showcase the new talent that
Sound City is renowned for promoting.

Liverpool Sound City is proud to be hosting the UK Music Student Awards at the
Echo Arena on 17th May. Launched by George Martin, the awards are in collaboration
with Access To Music and are hosted by BBC Radio 1’s Edith Bowman. For 8 years this
unique event has celebrated, identified and supported new talent within music education including Ed Sheeran and affirms Access To Music’s position as the link between the industry and music education. The awards and Access To Music programme give the stars of tomorrow an amazing opportunity to shine today with recognition directly from the music industry.

Sound City Expo takes its inspiration from the golden age of Expos, where the
new, the innovative and the exciting were brought together under one roof to
delight and amaze. The event will bring the newest and most forward-thinking
exhibitors to the Echo Arena in Liverpool - providing access for both consumers
and music/digital professionals to the people, tools and services they will need as
we move ever onwards in the digital age.

As a reaction to the traditional, staid music trade-shows that have proliferated the
calendar, Sound City Expo will focus on the current and future intersection of music, art, business and technology - giving a real insight into what is possible in the modern age.

Sound City Expo will be fully integrated into both the convention and festival offerings of Liverpool Sound City manifest in live demos, master classes, discussions and more featuring many performers and speakers.

Dave Pichilingi, CEO Sound City comments "We're thrilled to announce the first wave
of bands that'll make up the line-up for Liverpool Sound City 2012 - an eclectic mix of genres that makes our festival such an interesting, innovative, must-see event. We're taking Sound City to whole new level this year by bringing in Access To Music and co-hosting the UK Music Student Awards, which shows our commitment to the new breed of musicians and those who work in the music industry, as well as being a great excuse for a party. We're also launching our very own Sound City Expo - an exhibition of what's new and interesting in music and tech for fans, bands and delegates alike."

Liverpool Sound City brings established acts to intimate venues and introduces you to
tomorrow’s headliners today. With hundreds more bands, pop culture initiatives and
a conference programme to be unveiled, Liverpool Sound City is the UK’s premier
cultural happening.
