Catfish and The Bottlemen to release debut single Homesick

Catfish and The Bottlemen

Catfish and The Bottlemen to release debut single Homesick

Llandudno 4 piece Catfish And The Bottlemen will release their debut single ‘Homesick’ through Communion Records on June 17, 2013. Working with producer and Communion co-founder Ian Grimble (Daughter, British Sea Power, Red Hot Chili Peppers) at the legendary Rockfield Studios in Wales, ‘Homesick’ is the first offering from what is proving to be a hugely productive session.

The track has already picked up radio plays from Steve Lamacq on 6Music and Zane Lowe on Radio 1, who tipped the single as his ‘Next Hype’ track. Catfish And The Bottlemen signed to Communion Records (Ben Howard, Michael Kiwanuka, Deap Valley, Half Moon Run) this Spring, following a furious 18 month period which saw them play over 100 live shows both in the UK and abroad.

Having honed their incredibly tight live set- which invariably sees frontman Van McCann climbing the walls and playing guitar as though his life depended on it- playing clubnights for Carl Barat and 6Music’s Chris Hawkins and persuading the likes of The Vaccines to attend their gigs, 2013 sees the band embarking on a headline UK tour- including London Barfly on June 3- alongside summer festival appearances at Dot to Dot, The Great Escape and Tramlines. Catfish And The Bottlemen are Van McCann (vocals and guitar), Billy Bibby (lead guitar), Benji Blakeway (bass) and Bob Hall (drums).

Dot to Dot Festival Manchester 2012 review

Dot to Dot Festival Manchester 2012 review

Bank Holiday Monday saw the Dot to Dot Festival arrive at Manchester and with it some fantastic bands from around the globe including Kyla La Grange, Pulled Apart by Horses and The Waves . Set over several different venues, including Zoo, The Deaf Institute and HMV Ritz there was a little bit of something for everyones musical tastes on offer throughout the day and night.

First up for us came Pond, an Australian band who we first saw during Sound City, Liverpool and definitely had to see again. They were good last time but this time they blew The Deaf Institute's roof off, figuratively speaking of course. As this was their last gig in the UK, they definitely provided one hell of a finale to their latest tour here and there wasn't a single person standing still throughout the whole set. With a heavily 60's rock influenced set with lashings of psychedelic punk and some funked out bass added into the mix from bassist, Wirey B Buddha. Front man, Paisley Adams, who must be made of jelly going by his dancing skills, didn't keep still throughout the entire set, with warm up lunges to every bit of him moving at once all done while providing some emotive singing and ending the set by jumping onto the bar and crowd surfed his way back to the stage.
Pond are a band who are force to be reckoned with, both musically and visually and their love for what they do clearly shines through and reaches the heart and of the audience. Music is in their very soul and once you've seen them, Pond is in yours.

After such a riotous performance from Pond, we decided on a bit of a chilled out music, courtesy of Ryan Keen, who has just recently supported Ed Sheeren on tour. With his mellow vocals and mix of upbeat and laid back tempo, mainly played with a rhythmic-percussive finger-picking technique, this was the perfect opportunity to kick back and relax, unfortunately, the venue chosen for him wasn't ideal and he was drowned out by the rock band playing upstairs. This didn't stop the crowd from enjoying his set and each song was met with huge applause. One song in particular stood out for everyone, "Aiming For The Sun" a beautiful, heartfelt song which he wrote after the loss of a close friend. If you're out and about doing the festival circuits this year, keep an eye out for Ryan in the listings and go listen to this talented Devon lad and hopefully this time it will be in the right environment.

We were then off to see Willis Earl Beal, so had to miss out on some other bands along the way, something we regret know as we were kept waiting for 45 minutes for him to appear on stage, by which time a lot of other people had had the same idea as us and left to go and watch someone, who can actually turn up when they're meant to. Word to the wise, if Axel Rose can't get away with it, you definitely cannot!!

The final band for us was New York based, The Drums, playing their final gig in the UK for a year at HMV Ritz and the place was completely packed out. With a set heavily influenced by 80's electro pop and lead singer, Johnny Pierce's Morrissey style vocals, foppish dance moves and head tilting backwards in a dramatic style, all that was missing was the daffodils in his back pocket to be honest and the Morrissey tribute would have been pretty accurate.

The gig started off fairly promising, unfortunately, as the gig went on, the songs started to merge into one, not solely because of the music, but because of the continuous use of the lyrics, "oh oh oh oh oh" and " oh la la la la". To do it a couple of times in a set fair enough, but every single song, I'm sorry, but if you can't think of a lyric, just leave the song a bit shorter, no one will mind, at least there is a chance we may be able to differentiate between each track. But that's just my opinion though, as most of the crowd seemed to enjoy it, so much so they even got lighters out and even ventured as far as crowd surfing, which in a gig like this is like head banging at a Steps gig. The final song of the night was dedicated to Lauren, a girl who has been to every single gig they've played in the UK in the last three years. Now that's dedication to the old "Oh oh oh oh oh" lyrics or possibly a tad stalkery!!

So that wraps up a rather successful Dot to Dot Festival in Manchester. many many highs, some lows and the truly amazing Pond. Come back soon guys, we miss your uniqueness already!!

The countdown to this year’s Dot To Dot is hotting up with less than a month to go until a litany of the globe’s biggest buzz bands hits Bristol, Nottingham and Manchester over this coming Jubilee Bank Holiday weekend. Headlined by The Drums and Pulled Apart By Horses, and with appearances from Wavves, Willis Earl Beal, Dog Is Dead, Summer Camp, Lucy Rose, Pond and more, the tri-city event is set to reveal even more must-see acts for 2012, and you can catch them all for the mind-blowing ticket price of just £20!
Says Dot To Dot Organiser Anton Lockwood: “There’s under a month to go until Dot To Dot 2012 and the latest acts joining us showcase what a fantastically exciting line-up of new music we have on offer. From high octane rock to soulful singer songwriters these are the acts that people will be talking about all summer long and with tickets currently £20 it's great value for money'.”

Currently enjoying widespread critical acclaim for his second, Steve Albini produced, long player ‘Attack on Memory’, Dylan Baldi AKA Cloud Nothings who first came to the music world’s attention with his pithy lo-fi power-pop in 2009 are the first of the latest wave of bands to be announced for Dot To Dot. Honing his craft on the road over the past two years with a crack live band, Cloud Nothings’ sound has quickly matured into compelling gritty indie-rock territory, giving the band a real shot at stadium-filling glory, so make sure you catch them first in intimate surrounds at Dot To Dot.

One of the most exciting bands to have emerged from New York in the past year, Dot To Dot are delighted to announce that Friends will be playing the Nottingham leg of this year’s event. Named after Brian Wilson’s favourite Beach Boys album, Friends have left a trail of slack-jawed hipsters in the wake of their effortlessly cool percussive heavy take on post-disco funk-pop. Taking Liquid Liquid and ESG’s blueprint and bringing it bang up to date, they’re a top drawer live act that knows how to rock a party.

Also adding some serious weight to proceedings are The Internet Syd Tha Kyd and Matt Martians from Odd Future playing their only shows outside of London. The first act out of the traps on OFWGKTA’s Odd Future Records, with their debut long player Purple Naked Ladies, The Internet’s hip-hop soul has garnered them high praise across the board.  Sibling duo 2:54 will also be bring their love of a bit of lo-fi action to Dot To Dot. Embodying the new face of Riot Grrrrl, 2:54’s blend of ethereal vocals and abrasive guitars has made them a stand-out live act who are sure to be one of Dot To Dot’s biggest draws. Mixing pure emotion and rock n roll dynamics, A Plastic Rose will be demonstrating exactly why their incisive riffs have been winning over audiences across the UK and Ireland. With their debut album due for release in September this year, the band are releasing a series of singles and hitting the festival circuit in the run up, beginning with their performance at Dot To Dot.

Channelling the spirit of Britrock, Stoke’s All The Young, who are currently making a name for themselves reinvigorating guitar-powered rock n roll for a new generation will also be joining the bill. A direct reaction to the identikit pop that currently rules the airwaves, All The Young’s swaggering live show is one not to miss.  Canadian tip for the top Doldrums another of the latest bands to join the bill, are set to be journeying the triumvirate of Dot To Dot cities. Fusing art-rock and electronica, Doldrums AKA Aldrick Woodhead is one of the most forward thinking producers around.

Steeped in the defining sounds of the last 60 years of pop, music obsessives Two Wounded Birds who have steadily built a reputation as one of the best live bands on the circuit will also be hitting Dot To Dot’s triumvirate of cities. Championed by The Drums’ Jon Pierce, the band has also gained high praise from the Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson and Blondie’s Debbie Harry for their exhilarating performances and timeless pop. Psychedelic electro folk five-piece Here We Go Magic will also be appearing at Bristol on June 2nd and Nottingham on June 3rd.  Creating their songs from melodies that can turn from gorgeous to challenging to a little scary and back again, they’re truly mesmerising and worth seeking out.

Adding even more thrills to the burgeoning bill, there will also be appearances from double-headed mackem drum behemoth Hydeand Beast, featuring the Futureheads’ Dave Hyde and Golden Virgins’ Neil Bassett, luscious Leeds based vocal harmonisers The Dunwells, alternative rocker Eugene Francis Jr (Bristol / Manchester) Brooklyn’s hardcore psych-rockers The Men who will only be playing the Manchester leg on June 4th, soaring guitar-smiths Last Dinosaurs, disaffected pomp from O Children, a DJ set from Metronomy’s Olugbenga, 19 year-old wunderkind Lewis Watson who has clocked up more than two million YouTube views for his emotionally charged song writing, Josh Kumra whose gutsy and heartfelt live show is getting those in the know hot under the collar, uber-producer and rising start Kwes, singer songwriter Mary Epworth, Bristol mobs The Other Tribe and Seasfire playing their home town date and electro trio Sunless 97 in Nottingham and Manchester.

As well as championing the most vital new music around, Dot To Dot organisers will is also be nurturing wider creative talents in 2012 with a competition to get your hands on a coveted photo pass! Dot To Dot have a photo pass, which gives you access to Dot To Dot venue photo pits, for each city up for grabs, and all you have to do to enter is post the best live shot you’ve ever taken to twitter with the hashtag #D2DFestPhoto or tag Dot To Dot Festival in your photo on Facebook. Three winners (one for each city) will receive a photo pass and the chance to get up close and personal with some of the most exciting acts around. This is a rare opportunity or you to get your foot in the door of the world of live photography, don’t miss it!

Mystery Jets join Dot To Dot festival

Dot To Dot festival today announce even more great new additions to their 2010 bill, which is set to roll into Bristol, Nottingham and, for the first time, Manchester at the end of next month.

Celebrating the landmark fifth anniversary of the festival that even the unpredictable British weather can’t trouble, Dot To Dot is pleased as punch to add even more scorching hot, up and coming talent to the hippest festival bill of the summer, a jam-packed line-up that already includes some of the world’s most exciting must-see acts such as returning psych-pop faves Mystery Jets (who just this week scored BBC Radio 1 & this year’s Dot To Dot resident DJ Zane Lowe’s Hottest Record In The World), acclaimed Cardiff-based proper indie torch bearers Los Campesinos! and folktronica popstrel & 2010 Brit Award winner Ellie Goulding.

Dot To Dot festival organiser Anton Lockwood (of DHP Group) said today: 'A big part of dot to dot is new music. So we are very excited to add to the dot to dot bill some of the best new talent in music from all around the world. You might not have heard these names now, but by this time next year some of these people will be household names!’

Kicking off the list of latest additions is Stockton-on-Tees post-punk four-piece The Chapman Family, one of this country’s hardest gigging bands, who will be unveiling tracks from their soon to be released debut album. Dark, intense and brooding (clue: their Myspace friends include both Joy Divison and Bill Hicks), this is one short sharp shock that you will definitely not want to miss.

Wichita Recordings’ latest signings Peggy Sue (formerly known as Peggy Sue & The Pirates) had been quietly amassing an army of fans the envy of their contemporaries via a highly collectable series of self-financed DIY EPs before signing on the dotted line with the well respected UK indie label in late 2009. Based in Brighton, Peggy Sue consist of twin frontwomen Katy Young and Rosa Slade plus drummer Olly Joyce and count acts such as Laura Marling, Mumford & Sons, Blood Red Shoes and The Maccabees as fans. They released their debut album 'Love And Other Fossils’ to great acclaim last month.

Villagers frontman Conor J O’Brien’s previous band The Immediate should have been massive in 2009. His new band Villagers (who are set to play both the Nottingham & Bristol legs of Dot To Dot) have just signed to Domino Records (home to a certain Sheffield beat combo plying their trade under the crazy name Arctic Monkeys – that’ll never catch on) and played last week’s Later With Jools. We absolutely promise you that Villagers will be massive in 2010. Wait and see,

Electropop wonder kids Fenech-Soler have been described as; 'The future of white dancefloor-scorching electro funk' by Time Out. Their new single 'Stop And Stare' (out this week) is currently being hammered on the airwaves and Fenech-Soler will bring their glacier cool French disco inspired synth-heavy sound to Dot To Dot’s Bristol & Manchester legs this year.

Also added to the bill today are fuzzy synth-pop duo Silver Columns erstwhile M83 man Nicolas Fromageau’s new band Team Ghost, new wave goth rockers O Children, Louisville, Kentucky three-piece Wax Fang, hotly-tipped indie-popster Lissie, Cajun Dance Party offshott Yuck, bluesy chanteuse Leah Mason and folk-inflected sounds from The Crookes.

Wild Beasts, Fionn Reagan and Field Music Added To Dot to Dot Line Up

Now in its landmark fifth year and touring three of the UK's most music-savvy cities (including Manchester for the first time in 2010), Dot To Dot is thrilled to announce some great additions to their fabulously eclectic line-up, harmonizing the best up-and-coming talent from across the globe.

These newly-announced acts cross numerous musical genres, from Canadian electro-pop to home-grown folk and all are already attracting rave reviews and tip-for-the-top nods from the savviest UK music writers. They join previously announced sensations such as 2010 Critics' Choice Brit Award winner Ellie Goulding, acclaimed Cardiff-based indie collective Los Campesinos!, returning psych-pop heroes Mystery Jets and BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe on what is shaping up as Dot To Dot's finest bill so far.

Festival organiser Anton Lockwood (of DHP Group) said today:

"We're very excited with the latest additions to the Dot To Dot line up! Wild Beasts had one of the most critically acclaimed albums of last year, which has just continued to grow in stature. Field Music might yet top the polls for this year too. Fionn Regan's rousing folk is going from strength to strength, whilst rockers are going to love Eighties Matchbox, Dan Sartain and Dead Confederate. Lights is the hugely popular new-synth sound of young Canada and is sure to be a hit. And if you love to hear a truly stunning singer, don't miss Rox! With these new additions we've brought a great deal more strength and diversity to the bill, we can't wait!"

First out of the traps are Wild Beasts, Domino Records signed teens who originally hail from previously uncharted rock'n'roll mecca The Lake District. Purveyors of ethereal and beautiful pop propelled by frontman Hayden Thorpe's majestic falsetto vocal (reminiscent of the late, great Billy MacKenzie), this is sure to prove one heck of a show.Acoustic folk troubadour (and former Mercury Music Prize nominee) Fionn Regan has been dubbed "A Bob Dylan for the 21st Century", but even that surefire compliment does not accurately describe the sheer breadth of emotion on offer on his new album 'The Shadow Of An Empire' - judge for yourself at Dot To Dot 2010.

Field Music (aka songwriting brothers Peter & David Brewis, accompanied by keyboard manipulator Andrew Moore) will thrill Dot To Dot's Bristol and Manchester legs with their artfully poised pop rock which draws upon a seemingly encyclopaedic range of classic pop influences. Canadian teen synth-pop sensation Lights describes her sound as "intergalactic electro music" and looks unstoppable in her quest to conquer this and many other planets with her genius electronic earworms - you will be powerless to resist! Already a star in her native Canada, she was recently awarded a prestigious Juno Award for 2009 New Artist of the Year and is set to release her debut album 'The Listening' on this side of the pond in May 2010.

Offering love songs tinged with reggae and wrapped in a ribbon of soul, Rox is blessed with both beauty and an incredible voice and looks set to go stratospheric this year and she is another great addition to Dot To Dot's ever eclectic bill. Birmingham three-piece Johnny Foreigner are also newly-confirmed and plan to inject some of their self-proclaimed "noisy pop" into proceedings.Meanwhile, rockers can look forward to the return of Brighton faves The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster, the Alabaman blues-rock growl of Dan Sartain, and US alt-rockers Dead Confederate.

Also added to the fantastic Dot To Dot bill today are Kirsty Almeida, The Cheek, De Staat, Dog Is Dead, Fol-Chen, Fun, Gentleman's Dub Club, Growing, Lawson, Lunar Youth, Morning Parade, The Red Suns, Ruby Suns,Small Black, White Hinterland, Wolf Gang and Jamie Woon.
