Travis,Hurts,Johnny Marr and more announced for T in the Park 2013

They played the very first T in the Park back in 1994 in their former incarnation Glass Onion, headlined in 2000 and 2005, and now the mighty Travis are set to return to Kinross to play T in the Park’s 20th year celebrations in what is set to be a poignant homecoming show for the band and audience alike. Festival organisers DF Concerts and founding partner Tennent’s Lager have today added an array of top acts to the T in the Park bill, with the Glasgow four-piece plus Hurts, Johnny Marr, James Skelly, Jack Savoretti, Willy Mason, Foy Vance, Steve Mason, Milo Greene and DIIV joining the festival line-up over 12th – 14th July.

Festival organisers have also revealed today which days each act is playing, with the weekend of the year fast taking shape.

Travis are huge favourites with the T in the Park crowd, and their previous performances (including 2 showstopping headline sets) are widely regarded as some of the greatest moments of the festival’s 20 year history. After the top 10 success of their debut album Good Feeling, they achieved global success with the seminal, 9 x platinum-selling follow-up The Man Who, which hit the top of the UK album charts. Their much loved back catalogue is packed with classic hits, which have earned them BRIT Awards for Best Album (The Man Who), Best British Group (2000 and 2002) and Ivor Novellos for Best Contemporary Song (Why Does it Always Rain on Me?) and Best Songwriter (Fran Healy). After a temporary hiatus, they make their much anticipated return with their 7th album later this year and are sure to receive a hero’s welcome when they make a long-awaited return to the festival in July.

Manchester Electro-pop duo Hurts were hailed by the BBC’s Sound of 2010 as ones to watch and since then have gone on to achieve global success. Theo Hutchcraft and Adam Anderson have released two critically acclaimed albums, Happiness (2010) and Exile (2013) packed with melancholic 1980s-inspired electro-pop gems, and were a huge hit with the crowd when they played T in the Park in 2010 and 2011, and are set to make a welcome return this July.

Recently crowned NME’s Godlike Genius, Smiths legend Johnny Marr is also heading to Kinross for T in the Park’s 20th year celebrations. As one half of one of the most influential British songwriting partnerships of all time, he challenged pop conventions with The Smiths’ giant, euphoric tunes, and his 30 year career has seen him perform with groups including The Cribs and Modest Mouse. Revered by music fans and critics alike, he has been bestowed with Q Magazine’s lifetime achievement award, Mojo’s Classic Songwriter Award, the Ivor Novello Inspiration Award, and of course, Godlike Genius by NME.

On his first solo-adventure since The Coral’s hiatus, James Skelly has enlisted the help of The Intenders and is due to release debut album Love Undercover this summer. The Coral have been a big favourite of T in the Parkers in years gone by, and their frontman is sure to thrill fans when he reprises some of their greatest hits in Kinross this July, as well as showcasing his new material.

English-Italian singer-songwriter Jack Savoretti released his third album Before the Storm last year to a raft of rave reviews. His catchy guitar tunes are sure to go down a storm with the T in the Park crowd when he makes his debut in Kinross this July.

US singer-songwriter Willy Mason’s debut album Where the Humans Eat, which featured the classic Oxygen, won him major critical acclaim and a legion of fans. Having recently toured with T in the Park headliners Mumford and Sons, he released his third studio album Carry On in December and is set to play the festival’s 20th year celebrations this July.

Northern Irish singer-songwriter Foy Vance made a big impression with his 2012 release The Melrose EP, and is set to follow it up with his new album Joy of Nothing this summer. Celebrated for his thought-provoking, powerful lyrics and spine-tingling vocals, he’s been hailed as one of the finest song-writers to emerge from Northern Ireland in recent years.

Fife-born Steve Mason, formerly of The Beta Band is now a solo artist in his own right, with his 2013 release Monkey Minds in the Devil's Time winning critical acclaim from the likes of The Guardian. It’s sure to be a special moment when he plays on home soil with his solo debut at T in the Park this July.

Also announced today are LA pop-outfit Milo Green, who bring their harmony-drenched, folk-tinged pop to Kinross. Describing their sound as cinematic-pop, they released their self-titled debut album earlier this year. 

DIIV created instant vibrations in the blog-world with their impressionistic debut EP Sometime. With Zachary Cole Smith at the helm, the Brooklyn four-piece’s debut album Oshin blends classic kraut, Creation-records psychedelia, and late-80s Seattle influences to great effect.

Festival Director Geoff Ellis said: “Travis have given us some epic performances at T in the Park over the past 20 years, including at our very first outing back in 1994 and incredible headline sets in 2000 and in 2005. They’ve been there since day 1, and it really does feel like they are part of the fabric of T in the Park. We’re absolutely thrilled that they’ll be joining us for our 20th year celebrations – it wouldn’t have felt quite right without them. They’re one of Scotland’s all-time greats with some massive tunes, and the sound of 85,000 voices singing along to their greatest hits in Kinross this July will be quite a poignant moment.

“Johnny Marr is a true legend and we’re honoured that he’ll be joining us for our 20th year celebrations, alongside all the other great acts announced today. It’s going to be a great weekend.”

The Cambridge Folk Festival announces first acts

The Cambridge Folk Festival is pleased to announce the first names for this year’s Festival.


Playing on Stage 2 on the opening Thursday night of the Festival will be: Lucy Rose, Willy Mason and Kathyrn Roberts and Sean Lakeman.

Deer Shed Festival 4 - First Acts Announced

The first musical morsels to come off the production line for this year’s Deer Shed Festival create a small, but perfectly formed snippet of the treats in store for 2013… The initial batch of artists consists of;  New York guitar and pop maestro Darwin Deez, one of 90s Brit pop leading lights Gaz Coombes, Massachusetts singer-song writer Willy Mason, the multi-award winning ethereal folk sounds of The Unthanks, Tubular Bells for Two’ - the antipodean take on Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells as reincarnated by Daniel Holdsworth and Aiden Roberts in their 2012 Edinburgh Festival hit show, and with The Milk bringing some funk and soul to the show for the Friday night warm-up entertainment, these, along with; Stealing Sheep, Public Service Broadcasting, To Kill A King, Zervas and Pepper, Kitty the Lion, Blue Rose Code and Marconi Union complete this first dollop of mouthwatering artists for the discerning music lover!

Darwin Deez took the airwaves by storm in 2010 with his debut single “Radar Collector” and subsequent self-titled album. Back with his second album released later in 2013, Darwin Deez is set to bring his mix of sunshine pop and indie attitude to drive Deer Shed Festivals’ audience crazy with his offbeat dance routines, which will be sure to set the Saturday night Main Stage alight!

Gaz Coombes will be swinging by Deer Shed Festival’s Lake stage on Friday evening to shake off the shackles of an era and delight Deer Shed Festival’s faithful with a showcase of his delectable individual stylings and multi-instrumentalist talents in the afterglow of his first solo album Here Comes the Bombs’. Released last year his solo style was a more reflective, darker and more experimental sound then in his Supergrass days but the album remains very colourful and live Gaz produces high-octane, premier league entertainment!

Fiction records golden boy, Willy Mason will be bringing his celebrated blend of acoustic folk and roots to delight festival goers. With his long awaited third album Carry On released at the end of 2012 after a five year hiatus since his last album, 2013 is set to see Willy return to the spotlight and Deer Shed are giddy with excitement to be able to welcome this incredibly talented musician to the festival.

The Unthanks will be continuing the strong family vibe from Deer Shed’s frolicking fields onto the stage with their much loved, award winning, highly acclaimed ethereal sounds as they present Songs from the Shipyard. They will be beautifully accompanying archive footage from the height of the Shipping industry through to its decline in the Thatcher era. Political, social, with stories of hardship, pride, war, tragedy and pints of mild; A critically acclaimed audio-visual treat in front of a large cinema screen in the Big Top on Sunday.

The Milk blend classic Motown and Northern soul with modern pop to create their soulful, party-ready sound. Pulling together elements of old school R&B sounds with hip-hop, dub, and rock influences to create a style of pop that delivered big fun on every track. Their debut album, Tales from the Thames Delta, arrived in the summer of 2012 to steely industry nods and a plethora of A&R attention, but more importantly, the crowd loved them and Deer Shed Festival fans will be taken back in time to kick start proceedings on the Friday night to really let their hair down and get the party started!

Tubular Bells for Two is the five star reviewed, sell-out Edinburgh show from Daniel Holdsworth and Aiden Roberts, with such a unanimous public and professional opinion of the show, the Deer Shed audience are pretty much guaranteed an unforgettable experience and are in for a real treat! Public Service Broadcasting does exactly what it says on the tin - taking a nostalgic look back over forgotten public service broadcasts and sewing them together to create fantastic tunes to accompany the priceless collection of antique footage, this audio-visual experience is set to entertain and enthrall! Along with Liverpudlian trio Stealing Sheep, five piece ‘rousing orch-folk’ To Kill a King, the summertime soul of Cardiff’s Zervas and Pepper, the chirpy folk-pop of Kitty The Lion, the Caledonian soul of Blue Rose Code and the ever ambient Marconi Union completing the line-up for this first wave of announcements for Deer Shed Festival 4. Elbow Live from Jodrell Bank - The Review

Only at Jodrell Bank would you find an array of live music and science displays all overlooked by the awe inspiring world famous, grade 1 listed telescope Lovell and on Saturday it was Elbow's turn to headline a sold out concert here.

With various artists performing prior to Elbow, including opening act, Willy Mason, whose country songs about love and life teamed with his rich deep vocals and slow southern drawl created quite the atmosphere from the grey skies. 

Lianne Le Havas created a more upbeat affair with some jazz and funk influenced numbers mixed in amongst a few songs about her ex boyfriend. She also performed some tracks from her new album, "Is Your Love Big Enough" including "They Could Be Wrong" which unfortunately saw her vocals being overpowered by the drums. All in all though it was a good set from a talented young singer whose personality and style flowed out over Jodrell Bank and brought a lot of enthusiatic cheers from the crowd.

Then we moved back to the sombre sets of country and acoustic again with Cherry Ghost, a male solo artist, who to be honest wasn't my thing, I'd had my fill of seriousness with Willy Mason, but the crowd seemed to appreciate his lyrics and to be fair, rich mellow vocals. 

Finally we had some lively funked out music courtesy of Field Music, whose opening number was very reminiscent of Elton Johns, "Benny and the Jets". They followed this with 80's electro pop style and indie guitar riffs a plenty throughout the set. Judging by the sound from these guys I'd have to say they were influenced by Peter Gabriel and Prince and the New Power Generation, especially from the lead singer.

Finally it was the highlight of the night, the legends that are Elbow, renowned for their live performances, so to say I was excited to see them was quite possibly the understatement of the year and they did not disappoint in slightest, even though the rain became pretty torrential, it didn't stop them and us "Jodrellites" having a brilliant time. With amazing musicians and lead singer Guy Garvey's fabulously clear, powerful vocals as well as exuding a massive personality and interacting with the crowd as much as possible, Elbow rocked Joodrell Bank to it's very core. With fireworks and images of the band on stage and various galaxies/planets being projected onto Lovell, while singing firm favourites, including "The Bones of You", "Build a Rocket Boys" which was dedicated to the inner child in all us Jodrellites and "Mirror Ball" which saw the giant disco ball light up the stage. The atmosphere and feeling in Jodrell Bank was second to none. This is definitely the best live band I'd seen in a very long time and will always remember the atmosphere that Elbow created. So thank you Elbow for a great time, this is one Jodrellite who will always remember it.

Tickets for Elbow’s show on 23^rd June at Live From Jodrell Bank sold out in a remarkable 90 minutes and the band have confirmed their hand-picked supports for this very special show.  The North East’s finest musical sons Field Music have a unique talent for taking a range of different influences and creating their own, unique pocket symphonies.  Ivor Novello award winners Cherry Ghost are some of the best contemporary songwriters around whilst Lianne La Havas will be showcasing the folk and soul of her much anticipated debut album ‘Is Your Love Big Enough’.  Willy Mason’s lo-fi, alt-folk completes a day of outstanding musical entertainment.

Mercury Music and Brit Award winners Elbow, formed in 1991, have five top 20 studio albums under their belt including the phenomenal multi platinum The Seldom Seen Kid and most recent Build A Rocket Boys. The band have also been commissioned to compose the BBC 2012 London Olympics theme tune.

The following day, Paul Weller and supporting cast will ramp up the volume at this iconic setting.  Modfather Paul Weller is an internationally acclaimed star whose song-writing is a huge part of British Culture, throughout his musical career from his early days in The Jam, to his much loved hits with The Style Council, as well as a solo career spanning over 20 years. With Brit Awards, Mercury Nominations and an Ivor Novello Award, Paul Weller has provided music lovers with hits such as The Changing Man, You Do Something To Me and Wake Up the Nation and will also be performing tracks from his new number 1 album ‘Sonik Kicks’.

Graham Coxon has been confirmed as the main support for Paul Weller’s show at the Jodrell Bank observatory and the Blur lead guitarist and solo artist is a welcome addition to what is shaping up to be a spectacular bill.  Graham releases his highly anticipated 8^th solo album ‘A + E’ on 2^nd April and his records mix alt-rock, folk and lo-fi with consummate ease.  Graham Coxon is revered by his musical peers being described by Noel Gallagher as ‘the most gifted guitarist of his generation’ and has previously collaborated with Paul Weller on the single ‘This Old Town’.

Graham recently picked up the Outstanding Contribution To Music Award with Blur at the NME Awards and his set will be the perfect prelude to the Modfather taking the stage.

Baxter Dury showcases the expertly constructed psychedelic pop joy of his ‘Happy Soup’ album.  His sharp portraits of odd ball characters and hook laden storytelling have marked him out as a wordsmith of some renown and his self professed ‘seaside psychadelia’ is a guaranteed crowd pleaser.

Collaborators of choice to the A-list, Little Barrie have also been added to a sonically charged line up.  Having worked with Primal Scream, The Chemical Brothers, Spiritualized and Paul Weller himself, the band’s lead guitarist Barrie Cadogan is often referred to as the greatest guitarist of his generation and his band bring their undiluted rock n’ roll swagger to Jodrell Bank for what is set to be an unforgettable live performance.

The Live From Jodrell Bank series sees some of the most innovative artists performing in this unique and dramatic setting, marrying science and music and bringing the audience superlative sounds from earth and beyond. The bands will even project visuals onto the 76 metre Lovell telescope.

For over five decades, the giant Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank has been part of the Cheshire landscape and an internationally renowned landmark for astronomers.  Since the summer of 1957 it has been exploring the depths of outer space in a quest for knowledge. It remains one of the biggest and most powerful radio telescopes in the world, spending most of its time investigating cosmic phenomena that were undreamed of when it was first conceived.
