Marc Almond releases Dancing Marquis Extended EP

Marc Almond Dancing Marquis Extended EP

Marc Almond releases Dancing Marquis Extended EP

Marc Almond announces the release of Dancing Marquis, an extended EP which compiles two previously limited edition releases with two brand new tracks and two exclusive and stunning remixes.

In 2013, Marc Almond realised the ambition of a lifetime when he collaborated with legendary producer Tony Visconti (David Bowie, Hazel O'Connor, T Rex, Morrissey.) The stunning results of their unique collaboration can be heard on the opening tracks The Dancing Marquis.

Next to producer Tris Penna, Visconti also lends a helping hand with string arrangements and mixing duties on two further tracks; Tasmanian Tiger and Death of a Dandy, the latter inspired by the death in 2010 of Soho’s tragic artist Sebastian Horsley.

Continuing in this collaborative vein, the CD also features the talents of Martin McCarrick (Siouxsie and the Banshees, Therapy?) contributing cello on the hearteningly buoyant Burn Bright, and strings on title track The Dancing Marquis, a song which Marc penned 'with Henry Paget, 5th Marquess of Anglesey in mind'.

Jarvis Cocker contributes an infectious electro-pop number he wrote especially for Marc, Worship Me Now, where he also features as a special guest on backing vocals and production duties in conjunction with Jason Buckle (All Seeing I).

Love Is Not On Trial sees Marc once again collaborating with Carl Barat (Libertines), his co-star in the 2012 opera ‘Poppea’ at Theatre du Chatelet in Paris. Produced again by Tris Penna, the song was written especially for Marc by Carl, who also features on guitar and vocals.

Rounding off this release are two brand new tracks, So What’s Tonight? and Idiot Dancing.

Two additional dance remixes of Worship Me Now are also included exclusively on this release.

Marc Almond, winner of the 2013 Ivor Novello Inspiration Award, will be releasing Ten Plagues in July 2014; a 2-disc release incorporating a live performance DVD of the Ten Plagues song cycle performed at London’s atmospheric Wilton's Music Hall along with a CD featuring a studio recording of the song cycle. Marc is touring throughout 2014 with Jools Holland.

Stars To Perform At Inaugural Greenwich Music Time

Stars To Perform At Inaugural Greenwich Music Time

Stars To Perform At Inaugural Greenwich Music Time

This August sees the launch of Greenwich Music Time, the first event of its kind ever to be hosted at the Old Royal Naval College (ORNC) at the heart of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site. Taking place across this summer’s August Bank Holiday weekend, the event will feature a unique series of concerts which will transform this breathtaking riverside location into the ultimate open-air concert venue.

Running in association with the ORNC Foundation, Greenwich Music Time will present four nights of world class concerts featuring visionary electropop outfit Goldfrapp, who will perform songs from their illustrious back catalogue, as well as from 2013’s acclaimed Tales Of Us. A major coup for the festival, this will be the duo’s only London show of 2014. Multi-million-selling English tenor Russell Watson will headline on Friday 22nd backed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and featuring some very special guests, and drawing the festival to a close on Saturday 23rd is local boy Jools Holland, who brings his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra to Greenwich for a set that will feature special guest singers Marc Almond and Melanie C.

Alison Goldfrapp: “We can't wait to perform at the Greenwich Music Time Festival this summer. We'll be playing a selection of old and new songs in the stunning & beautiful grounds of the Old Royal Naval College. It’s our only London show this year so we look forward to seeing you there!

In what is a truly stunning location, Greenwich Music Time’s stage will be situated in the heart of Sir Christopher Wren’s iconic twin-domed riverside masterpiece providing 5000 revellers a night with the opportunity to experience Greenwich’s unique historic landscape from an incredible perspective. With over 1.7 million annual visits, the ORNC is one of the most visited attractions in the UK and has provided the backdrop for countless movies including recent blockbusters Les Misérables, Skyfall and The King’s Speech.

The concert series will also showcase Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, with its students and recent graduates performing an opening set each night before the headline show. Based at the ORNC, Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance is the UK's only conservatoire of music and dance. Its innovative course provision, exciting performances and groundbreaking education, community and social inclusion work make Trinity Laban a leader in the advancement of elite and creative artistic practice.

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson: "Greenwich Music Time will add to the unbeatable variety of great music events that London hosts throughout the year. Amidst the historic surroundings of the Old Royal Naval College, it promises to be a summertime treat and will be another reason to visit this increasingly exciting part of the capital. I am a passionate believer in high quality music education and opportunities for young musicians to play live, so I am delighted that Trinity Laban, who we are working with on one of our key education projects, are also involved."

Brendan McCarthy, CEO of the ORNC Foundation: “We are delighted to welcome the inaugural Greenwich Music Festival to the Old Royal Naval College this summer. Sir Christopher Wren’s architecture will provide a stunning backdrop for the concerts. We are particularly pleased that musicians from Trinity Laban, one of our site partners here at the ORNC, will be performing along with the great artists lined up for the Festival,” adds McCarthy. “It promises to be a fantastic four days of music.”

Set amongst one of the most important groups of historic buildings in London, and with a refreshingly eclectic programme, Greenwich Music Time is one of the most significant additions to the live music calendar for some time, providing music fans with a unique cultural experience while raising awareness and public support for the work started by the ORNC Foundation in 1997.

There is a priority booking period for local residents which will run from February 26th – 2nd March 2014. See www.greenwichmusictime/local for details. Tickets go on general sale from March 3rd 2014. An optional £2 donation to the ORNC Foundation will be applied to each ticket.

With Soft Cell, in partnership with Dave Ball,  Marc Almond achieved a string of international hits - biggest of all, their version of northern soul classic Tainted Love, while Memorabilia is cited as the first techno record ever.

10 million-plus worldwide record sales later, Soft Cell are a British icon, influencing generations of musicians - from Pulp, The Pet Shop Boys and Suede, to Goldfrapp and Antony and The Johnsons. This concert coincides with the release of Almond’s new greatest hits double album. On stage Almond comes alive, his songs too: whether they are synth-pop, 60s-inspired kitsch-arama, bare-naked acoustic ballads or orchestrated splendour, the experience is unique.

Soft Cell parted amicably in 1984 to pursue solo projects. Marc had already branched out with Marc and the Mambas, a loose collective of musicians, and recorded the innovative influential double album Torment and Toreros which Marc has called 'a nervous breakdown put to music'. Mambas shambolic and florid musical shows put Marc in a unique musical place that had one foot in mainstream and the other in the underground. Marc has always been one of very few artists able to comfortably move from one to the other. Torment and Toreros was influenced by Spanish Flamenco, Marc has always used World Music influences in his music from Turkish torch songs to Brazilian Macumba and Russian folk. The Mambas use of a full string section inspired a young Antony Hegarty later of Antony and the Johnsons. Antony has always openly cited Marc as the person that without whom it would not have been possible for him.

The mambas started Marc on his path as a chansonierre troubadour, a singer of the songs of others that he would make his own, Jacques Brel, Scott Walker, Lou Reed, Juliette Greco, Nico, Syd Barrett - all early influences of Marc. Marc has said that his style comes from Jacques Brel and Marc Bolan glam with a bit of Aznavour and Johnny Ray thrown in, add some 60's Joe Meek and Orchestral Pop and some 60's Northern soul, a pinch of Music Hall and you have something approaching Marc. It is this mix of styles that have made him hard to pigeonhole, but also totally unique. He has been called over the years The Judy Garland of the Garbage Heap, The Acid House Aznavour, Jim Reeves of the Bedsit Generation, Marc Bolan and Juliette Greco's love child and Britain's own Piaf.

Marc has enjoyed Many diverse collaborations during his career, Nick Cave, Siouxsie, Nico, Jools Holland, Bronski Beat, Rosenstolz, John Cale, David Johannson, Kelli Ali, Current 93, Coil, PsycicT.V, Antony and the Johnsons, Baby Dee, Little Annie, Matt Johnson, Jim Thirwell, Ferry Corsten, 60's icons Gene Pitney and P.J Proby who he produced an album for in 1998 entitled Legend. He has written many songs but prefers to sing songs by other writers and artists, saying it frees him from his own baggage allowing him to express the things he wants to, in sometimes a better way than he can write himself.

2011 saw the release of a new collaboration album with Berlin based musician Michael Cashmore entitled Feasting With Panthers.

The band have appeared on BBC Two’s Later…With Jools, won out at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards and made a triumphant return to Liverpool Philharmonic in 2010. Thursday 21 June 8.30pm,

‘One of this country’s finest singer-songwriters’ Montreal Gazette on Amelia Curran.
Newfoundland-born Curran describes song-writing as an act of ‘expressing the inexpressible’; her achingly beautiful songs sneak up on you, little bits of the lyrics stick in your head. Witness her perform them  live and you’ll understand why, although relatively unknown in the UK, she is making waves in Canada.
Nunnery has stories to tell, and a voice that makes you listen. She released her debut album Company of Ghosts in 2010 when BBC Radio 2’s Mike Harding named it in his top ten releases of the year. She also appeared in the inaugural Irish Sea Sessions at Liverpool Philharmonic and her reputation as a captivating new voice in British folk continues to grow.
