Sons of Kemet debut album Burn receives rave reviews

Sons of Kemet debut album Burn receives rave reviews

Sons of Kemet debut album Burn receives rave reviews

Seldom has a band on the British jazz scene created such a buzz before releasing an album, but through their live shows - and some delightfully unexpected airplay - Sons of Kemet have done just that. A super-group of sorts led by clarinetist, saxophonist and composer Shabaka Hutchings with Oren Marshall on tuba and both Tom Skinner and Seb Rochford on drums, Sons of Kemet are set to release their stunning debut album Burn on 9 September on the go-to label of the year, Naim Jazz.

It was in spring of 2011 at Charlie Wright’s in East London that Sons of Kemet first unleashed their unique sound to a live audience and since then they have gone on to impress many with their live shows, whether it be in session for BBC Radio 3’s Jazz On 3, at this year’s Cheltenham Jazz Festival or in collaboration with the BBC Concert Orchestra at the Queen Elizabeth Hall as part of the 2012 London Jazz Festival. Their debut album is therefore much anticipated and rest assured that Burn delivers on every level. In short, the combination of these four mighty creative forces has yielded music that is powerful, lyrical and, above all, fiercely original.

Although born in London, Hutchings spent most of his childhood in Barbados. On returning to the UK in 1999 he was soon heralded as an exceptional talent on the British jazz scene, not only playing with luminaries such as Jerry Dammers, Courtney Pine and The Heliocentrics but also being named a BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artist. However, he felt the music he was playing lacked the Caribbean slant of his background and thus, Sons of Kemet (Kemet is one of the first recognised names for ancient Egypt and its last Nubian king was called Shabaka) was born.

It’s partly the deployment of two drummers – and two powerhouse drummers at that – that gives Sons of Kemet their compelling and infectious sound. Skinner and Rochford’s visceral exchange of rhythmic ideas is an unforgettable, highly danceable experience.  Throw into this one of the great wild cards of contemporary British music, Oren Marshall on tuba, and you have a wonderfully unorthodox configuration.

For music and cultural inspiration it was back to his childhood and Barbados that Hutchings turned. Seeking guidance from Barbadian ethnomusicologists specializing in early Caribbean music, he was soon furnished with numerous recordings that he studied in depth.  Before long, the links between the music of New Orleans and West Africa became clear and the work of two visionary Jamaican artists in particular percolated into Hutchings’ mind:  Count Ossie and Cedric ‘Im’ Brooks, two musicians who would become a major influence on the band. However, the themes and sources of inspiration for all the tracks on Burn indicate a wider conceptual net. Inner Babylon addresses the issue of the cultural hegemony of America; The Godfather is a tribute to the legendary Ethiopian musician Mulatu Atsatkue (with whom Hutchings and Tom Skinner have played with over the last few years) and All Will Surely Burn is a reflection on the pressing subject of global warming. Hutchings’ interest in literature is referenced by two pieces that evoke writers who have inspired him: Song For Galeano is for celebrated Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano and The Book Of Disquiet is for the Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa. The reprise of The Rivers Of Babylon, which Hutchings describes as a ‘standard’ within the Afro-Caribbean tradition and a staple of Rastafarian nyabinghi drumming music, is arguably the clearest indication of the far-reaching history that frames Son Of Kemet.

A curiously addictive album that manages to appeal to both heart and mind, there is little to compare it with. Instead, Burn feels like that rare thing, an exciting new sound that somehow worms its way into your brain and won’t let go. Exceptionally assured for a debut album, Burn surely has to become one of the standout releases for 2013.

Goldfrapp - Present new album Tales of Us - NY Beacon Theater

Goldfrapp are excited to announce the album release event (and only scheduled U.S. show) for their stunning sixth studio album, Tales Of Us. Performing at The Beacon Theater NYC, accompanied by the Wordless Music Orchestra, Goldfrapp will present their brand new album along with catalogue favourites for one evening ONLY.

Pre-Sale runs 9am – 9pm on Thursday, 8 August with General on Sale on Friday, 9 August beginning at 9am. For more information visit Ticketmaster here: http://bit.ly/16Y0TLa

Tales Of Us is written and produced by band members Alison Goldfrapp and Will Gregory and was recorded at their studio in the English countryside. Recently, we shared with you a sneak peak of what’s to come, with the debut of the first film Drew – http://vimeo.com/70190035.

Lush, decadent, mysterious and seductive this short film serves as a living, breathing playground that we are happy to be invited to.

A sumptuous body of work, Tales Of Us has been two years in the crafting and is Goldfrapp’s most narrative, cinematic and intimate recording so far. Nothing in their accomplished back catalogue has hinted at the new lyrical breadth that the band have introduced to Tales Of Us.

All the songs bar one are named in the first person with a cast list of evocative character sketches, the contrary love affairs, the suspense, hallucinations, fairy tales and modern folklores documented and the traces of redemption they find in song take the poetry of Goldfrapp’s delicately considered music somewhere brand new.

Tales Of Us will be available from 9 September 2013 on CD, vinyl, digital and a special limited edition boxset that will feature bonus audio and video content and a photographic hardback book compiled by Goldfrapp, further details to follow.

Meanwhile, a brand-new Goldfrapp website - www.goldfrapp.com - has launched with exciting interactive plans to be revealed soon.

Deer Tick unveil new video for The Rock

Deer Tick unveil new video for The Rock

Deer Tick unveil new video for The Rock

Partisan Records has announced the release of Negativity, the eagerly anticipated new album from Deer Tick, which will be released in the UK on September 30th. To celebrate the release, the band will be playing a UK album launch show at London’s Borderline on Tuesday October 1st. The album will be preceded by the brand new single, and album opener, ‘The Rock’, out August 12.

Negativity marks Deer Tick’s fifth full-length studio release, and follow-up to 2011’s acclaimed Divine Providence.

Each new Deer Tick record has stood as a progressive milestone for frontman John McCauley and the Providence, Rhode Island-based band (guitarist Ian O’Neill, bassist Christopher Dale Ryan, keyboardist Rob Crowell, and drummer Dennis Ryan), but Negativity represents an epic leap forward on virtually all fronts. Recorded earlier this year in Portland, Oregon with legendary producer/musician Steve Berlin (The Blasters, Los Lobos, and last year’s McCauley side project, Diamond Rugs), the album is McCauley’s most personal work thus far as well as the band’s most undeniable and universal, their famously freewheeling musical approach refined here into a gloriously cohesive whole.

Negativity was penned over the course of a genuinely eventful 2012, an annus horribilus in which McCauley’s father pleaded guilty to federal charges of conspiracy and tax fraud, ultimately leading to a prison sentence. As if that weren’t enough, McCauley’s wedding engagement collapsed under the weight of his own excessive behaviour and impossible lifestyle. Like any true artist, McCauley channeled his anger, sadness, and regret into his work, resulting in what can be safely declared his finest collection of songs to date, impassioned and interior and increasingly mature, both as expression of emotion as well as pure unadulterated songcraft.

Deer Tick – sounding as sure-footed as one would expect from a band known for spending a couple of hundred nights each year on stage – more than match the strength of the material by taking a more detailed approach than on some of the breakneck recordings of their past. From the sparkling baroque pop of “The Dream’s In The Ditch” to the full-blown Memphis showstopper, “Trash,” Negativity sees the Tick bridging boozy punk, AM gold, bar band blues, country soul, and whatever else catches their fancy into their own profoundly American rock ‘n’ roll.

While Deer Tick have been rightfully hailed for their raucous rave-ups and substance-fuelled fervour, Negativity places considerable focus on the band’s nuanced and tender side, with notable highlights including the wrenching breakup ballad, “Hey Doll,” and “In Our Time,” a timeless country tearjerker featuring duet vocals from McCauley’s good friend, singer/songwriter Vanessa Carlton. At once heartbreaking, fist-pumping, and indeed, life-affirming, Negativity stands as a genuine high water mark for Deer Tick – a defining collection from a band driven by an undying faith in rock ‘n’ roll’s evergreen power of redemption and transcendence.

Scream Shout to release new album Threads in July

Scream Shout to release new album Threads in July

Scream Shout to release new album Threads in July

Scream! Shout! Say Nothing was born in an Irish pub ten years ago, with a collective shrug in agreement that the name wasn't important. After previous "serious bands" for all five members - Ben Davies, Ben Street, Chris Hollis, Dan Magee and Jamie Dunn - this would be a project with no aim other than making music they all enjoy.

Within a year, the post-hardcore outfit were preparing to set off in a bus bought for £500 from a local pool team, to play gigs up and down the UK. Graffiti-style pool balls splashed across the side of their mechanically frail ride, with the help of their new label Scylla Records, and a large percentage of the staff of the RAC, Scream Shout played their first UK tour.

The following four years saw two EPs, support slots with Hell Is For Heroes, Enter Shikari, Don Broco and Deaf Havana, and many more tours (in a slightly less catastrophic bus). Then, in 2009, the band decided to begin writing a new record.

A five-year writing and recording process was not the original plan. But, true to the band's mission statement, this was not a project that was going to get in the way of 'real life', and real-life commitments outside of the walls of the studio like university, house-moving, job changes and a six-month marine biology project in Cambodia (no, really) meant that sessions laying down tracks for the new album were few and far between.

So here we are. Five years after the first writing sessions, a decade after the band's inception, and with a ridiculous name shortened to Scream Shout, 'Threads' is finally here.

The album is released on July 22nd 2013 on Scylla Records

Dead wolf Club release second album RAR

Dead wolf Club

Dead wolf Club release second album RAR

Since the last album the Dead Wolf Club have supported The Wedding Present, The Black Belles, Our Lady Peace, Bow Wow Wow and Atari Teenage Riot.

They have also played many niche Festivals from 1234 through to Lodestar.

The Second album from Dead Wolf Club epitomises the economic and social struggles in the UK presently.

"RAR" Is what you start seeing when you have been out in the snow for too long. Your mind makes up distortions of shapes and these can appear as monsters. These monsters are apparitions of the past and the future.

'RAR' Is also data compression and error recovery.

In a world too heavily reliant on cell phones, computers, tv and media, RAR throughout comments on the escapsim of these trappings.

Its religion vs science, nature vs science, fate vs determination. Is it all for one or one for all?

Sebastapol release their debut album, Hello all stations, This is Zero

Sebastapol

Sebastapol release their debut album, Hello all stations, This is Zero

Recorded at Drop Out Studios in Camberwell and mixed by legendary post punk producer Mick Glossop (Van Morrison, Magazine, Public Image, The Wonder Stuff) and mastered at Skye Mastering by Denis Blackham.

Sebastopol’s sparse and atmospheric sound has been described as like a modern, darker reboot of The Police, incorporating elements of dub, post-punk, gothic dream pop, and even 1970s French rock.

The band consists of Nick Powell on vocals and bass, Phil Richards on guitar and Tom Standage on drums. The album's title is a wartime radio call-sign from the 1940s, signalling the start of a message. For the band it has the double meaning of introducing a simpler and starker musical approach. The album contrasts upbeat melodies with lyrical themes dominated by imagery of failure, loss, water and rebirth. Also, vampires and Zeppelins.
The album has been almost two years in the making from concept to final mixes. The concept? Now there’s a story…It all started with the sharks. Sent to a remote island off Nova Scotia in 2010 to make a film about shark attacks on seals, documentary-maker Nick Powell found himself stranded for a week when bad weather prevented aircraft from landing to pick him up. He returned to his first love of music and began writing songs inspired by his predicament. On his return to civilisation he called two of his old friends and told them it was time to make an album. They formed SEBASTOPOL to bring Nick's songs to life. "Perhaps this explains why the lyrics have such strong themes of water, death and loss," says Nick.

The band's name “SEBASTOPOL” comes from the non-standard guitar tuning used throughout the album.  “Sound-wise, it’s a very dynamic album” says Phil. “Instead of producing everything to be as loud as possible, the songs retain a sense of musical ‘space’ which contributes to their intensity and makes them more engaging.”

The album's artwork features an image of pioneering computer scientist Alan Turing, whose 100th birthday would have been in 2012, and who led the wartime code-cracking effort. "Turing has been in the air this year anyway, but there are such strong parallels between now and the 1940s, when he was doing his work," says Tom. "The 1940s was a time of economic austerity, yet at the same time a computer revolution was underway, and with the advent of the atom bomb optimism about technology had given way to fear of its consequences."

In June 2012 Sebastopol signed to Warm Fuzz, the independent label run by award winning producer Ian Shaw.

Mott The Hoople’s Ian Hunter reveals 20th studio album; When I’m President

Ian Hunter

Mott The Hoople’s Ian Hunter reveals 20th studio album; When I’m President

As leader of ‘70s British rock legends Mott the Hoople and as a hugely influential solo artist, Ian Hunter is widely revered as one of rock’n’roll’s most compelling performers and one of its most articulate songwriters.

On September 4, 2012, Hunter will release When I’m President (Proper Records), his 20th album of original songs, and the latest highlight in a storied career that’s produced immortal anthems like “All The Young Dudes,”  “All the Way From Memphis,” “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” and “Cleveland Rocks.”

The new album's 11 Hunter originals include such infectious, personally charged numbers as the wry, socially conscious title track, the gently introspective "Fatally Flawed" the bittersweet ballad "Black Tears," the chugging rocker "Wild Bunch," the swaggering "I Don't Know What You Want" (which features a guest vocal by Hunter's son Jesse) and the vivid, haunting "Ta Shunka Witco (Crazy Horse)"—all of which showcase the jagged immediacy of Hunter's one-of-a-kind voice and the punchy authority of his longstanding all-star backup combo the Rant Band.

"The songs seem to be more upbeat this time round," Hunter notes.  "The last two albums were pretty political, just because I thought the Bush years were horrible, and thankfully that's passed.  But I don't go looking for songs; I have to wait for them to come to me.  I had a spurt there in the summer of 2011, and that grew into this album.  I'd get up every day with something ringing in my head, so I'd try to catch it and get it down.  Songwriting's always been a mystery to me in that way.  Now and again you're nearer the sun, and you have to be ready to capture it."

The qualities of musical depth and emotional honesty that distinguish When I'm President have been constants in Ian Hunter's expansive body of work. Hunter was already a young veteran of London’s burgeoning rock scene when he joined Mott the Hoople in 1969, and recorded four iconoclastic albums with the quintet by the time it rode the glam-rock wave to international superstardom with the David Bowie-produced 1972 album All the Young Dudes and its Bowie-penned title hit.  The band's artistic and commercial success continued with 1973's Mott and 1974's The Hoople and Mott the Hoople Live, helping to set the stage for the rise of British punk and new wave before the group disbanded in 1974.

Hunter moved to New York and segued into a celebrated solo career with 1975's Ian Hunter, quickly building a formidable body of solo releases that expanded upon the achievements of his former band.

Following 1983's well-received All of the Good Ones Are Taken, Hunter took an extended hiatus that kept him out of the spotlight for much the next decade, until the 1993 death of his longtime friend and collaborator, guitarist Mick Ronson, jolted him back into musical action.

Like such acclaimed recent Hunter releases as Rant (2001), Shrunken Heads (2007) and Man Overboard (2009), When I'm President—his first new recording since Mott the Hoople's historic 2009 reunion shows at London's Hammersmith Odeon—ranks with Hunter's most impassioned and insightful work.

Hunter’s creative rebirth has produced some of the best music of his lengthy career, and When I'm President continues the remarkable resurgence of this true believer in rock 'n' roll's transformative power.

Hunter will kick of a tour of the United States and Europe on September 1. More details will be announced shortly.

Ben Glover - Do we burn the boats - Album Review

Ben Glover - Do we burn the boats - Album Review

Ben Glover is back with a fourth album, Do we burn the boats, as emotionally graceful and expertly Americana as his previous three.

Recorded in the heart of Nashville, the album was produced by Neilson Hubbard (Kim Richey, Glen Phillips, Garrison Starr) and features a track (Rampart Street) co written by seasoned folk songstress Mary Gauthier.

This album is excellent with tracks that are instantly memeroable.Ben Glovers' voice is smooth and very reminiscent of artists such as Bob Dylan, David Gray and Bruce Springsteen and lyrics that are on a par with them also.

The songs are mature in their approach and  thoughtful and thought-provoking, in fact this album has something for everyone and its defintley an album you will want to listen to over and over. Highly recommended

Rupert Stroud releases single ALWAYS for charity

Rupert Stroud

Rupert Stroud releases single ALWAYS for charity

New Album Chasing The Night out now AND Charity Single ‘Always’ for Alzheimer’s Research UK on Xidus Music

Singer/songwriter Rupert Stroud’s new album Chasing The Night, produced by Will Jackson (The Kaiser Chiefs, Embrace, The Cribs and The Music) offers impressive, beat driven arrangements that are dynamic, inventive and at times sweetly intimate.

The lyrics on this semi autobiographical record are emotive and thought provoking while Stroud’s vocals are captivating, compelling and dextrous, drawing comparisons to Tim Booth, Richard Ashcroft and Jim Morrison. The album ambitiously ranges from blues to grunge and, although he is singer/songwriter by definition, the sound is full and rock n roll.

Rupert and his band (drums Mick Bedford; keys and guitar Mike Pearson) are playing the gig circuit with Chasing the Night and it is receiving a great deal of attention. The band have done several live lounge appearances and radio interviews with BBC DJs. They played Live at Leeds earlier this year where he was dubbed as one of Yorkshire’s hottest young acts. He is also playing Galtres Festival this August among an incredible line up including Ash, Buzzcocks and Adam Ant.

Rupert has also released a charity single entitled Always to boost funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to this UK’s leading dementia research charity. It’s a tribute to Rupert’s grandma Eileen who died, aged 87, after a long struggle with Alzheimer’s disease:

“My grandma was one of the sweetest souls you could ever meet –I got my love of music and rhythm from her. But for the last few years of her life she needed 24-hour care. She didn’t recognise any of us and couldn’t speak – it was heartbreaking. Writing music and performing live is my passion and having this positive focus makes it so worthwhile. It’s young people like me who’ll reap the benefits of today’s pioneering research.”

The single will be available globally as a download here - rupertstroudforaruk.com

Mike Tyler releases his album Erection

Mike Tyler

Mike Tyler releases his album Erection

Mike Tyler
Debut UK Release Erection
Out August 20th on The Art Can Not Be Damaged

Mike Tyler is a celebrated non-academic, post-beat poet and musician in the American tradition. ‘Erection’ is his second album, creatively processed more like a novel than a recording. There is an incredible control over the work, with subtle musical innuendos and effects, as well as an incomparable sense of humour throughout. ‘Conversational Spanish’ has a false ending similar to Bacharach/David's ‘The Look of Love’, the song ‘Man Alone’ is in, of course, Mono, and entertainingly facile lyrics like ‘I’d like to throw a pie in the face of remorseless piety’ and ‘I was standin’ by a Wilson Picket fence at ‘bout the midnight hour’ prop up album wide.

A recurrent theme of this record is a feeling of discovery and understanding, as if it’s laying a sympathetic palm on your shoulder and saying ‘there there. There there!’ There’s something comforting in an understanding that comes across as understanding itself. When he first met his producer Bl’EVE this was exemplified; different backgrounds, different musical tastes, but an incredible feeling of shared understanding.

It is a record about the feeling when you are over something that has broken you up. Your heart has healed but it has reformed jaggedly. The sadness of the blues is connected with the success of rock 'n roll. This sets it apart from ISM (one of Mike’s own idiom creations meaning "Incredibly Sad Music" usually characterised by a back and forth of romantic wailing and a more modernist hard-edged disdain). Felt’s Lawrence, a cult hero of jangly ‘ISM’ (bands Girls and Real Estate both refer to him) is a major influence for Mike Tyler. As is the secretive poetic narrative of rock ‘n’ roll. He says:

“From the blues forward it has been as much about words as the music. Even an instrumental guitar track like Wipe Out would be nothing without, well, “ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, wipe out.” It can be a condensed language, it can be cryptic, it can be repetitive and rhythmic, yeah that’s right it’s poetry.”

Mike came from the New York City tradition of Lou Reed, mentored in a bar by the American poet Delmore Schwartz (who wanted poets to be as famous as baseball players), Patti Smith (a poet first) and Tom Verlaine of Television. Stand out moments of Mike Tyler’s career were catalysed by his way with words. Banksy stencilled his words “only the ridiculous survive” outside of London’s Paddington Station, while Beck fell under his charismatic spell while honing his song writing craft. He became known as The Most Dangerous Poet in America after breaking his arm during a reading and his poem “The Most Beautiful Word in the American Language” is on people’s Facebook walls, MySpace pages, and blogs, not to mention fridge doors.

Ben Glover releases new album Do We Burn The Boats

Ben Glover

Ben Glover releases new album Do We Burn The Boats

Out August 13th on

"Ben Glover's records are a shining work of kindness and heart, and I am proud to have co-written a song with him" Mary Gauthier, Singer/Songwriter

"He gives the listener reassurance and soul at a time when you thought those qualities were all used up." BBC

"One of Ireland's finest tunesmiths" Hotpress
“It seems that Ben Glover is on the edge of greatness." The Irish News

"Glover is our very own Bruce Springsteen with an Irish accent and shouldn't be missing in any record collection." State Magazine

Ben Glover is back with a fourth album, as emotionally graceful and expertly Americana as his previous three. But of course with even more song writing maturity, his Springsteen-esque qualities and healthy Dylan twinge even more present and, the critics’ early premonitions of greatness even more justified.

Recorded in the heart of Nashville, the album was produced by Neilson Hubbard (Kim Richey, Glen Phillips, Garrison Starr) and features a track (Rampart Street) co written by seasoned folk songstress Mary Gauthier.

"I intended to record just five songs for an EP, but after three days in the studio we all felt that there was a momentum happening that we couldn't ignore. So we decided to go full steam ahead and cut ten songs and make an album,” says Glover. “It all happened very quickly and organically, but I’ve learned that sometimes the creative process takes on a life of its own and when it does it’s best to follow it’s direction.”

Glover has garnered rave album and concert reviews from across the globe and has toured extensively both as an opening act as well as a headliner. In the past calendar year his touring schedule included dates in Belfast, London, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Dublin, New York, Brussels as well as dates at the famed Hotel Café in Los Angeles and sold out shows in the Nashville’s legendary Bluebird Café.

He hails from Glenarm, Co Antrim, a small coastal village 30 miles from Belfast, N. Ireland and splits him time between there and Nashville, Tennessee. This singer/songwriter traded in a degree in law to peruse music and from all accounts it was a move that has paid off.

‘I was always drawn to and continue to be attracted to artists of a poetic nature, or great storytellers—obvious names like Leonard Cohen, Van Morrison, and Paul Simon. And I've always had a great affection for country music, the Americana imagery always fascinated me. So people like Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson are important sources to me, as well. I suppose I am drawn to artists who had a very strong identity—maybe not the best singers in the world—but said important and meaningful things in their songs. Essentially, music has to come out of life, and if there's no life there is no music.’

Glover has toured and/or performed with Vince Gill, Buddy Miller, Jim Lauderdale, Mary Gauthier, Jason Mraz and Tift Merritt. His songs have been used in feature films such as “Finding Joy,” hit webisode series “Adults Only,” and as the theme song for BBC N.Ireland sports programme "The Championship."

Robert Cray unveils Nothin But Love album

Five-time Grammy award winning legend and Blues Hall of Fame Inductee ROBERT CRAY is pleased to announce that his brand new studio album “Nothin But Love” will be released in the UK by Provogue Records on Monday August 27th.

Produced by Kevin Shirley (Joe Bonamassa, Aerosmith, The Black Crowes), the 10-song album was written by all four Robert Cray Band members; Robert Cray (vocals/guitar), Jim Pugh (keyboards), Cray band co-founder Richard Cousins (bass) and Tony Braunagel (drums). The new album blends blues, rock, soul and jazz, with a lyric-sheet that examines the triumphs, fallouts and follies of love.

Robert Cray will be available for face to face interviews in London on Wednesday June 27th, following his concert the Shepherds Bush Empire the night before (part of the London Blues Festival).

“Nothin But Love” is Cray’s 16th studio album and marks the latest milestone in a career that has produced 15 Grammy award nominations (5 wins), over 12 million record sales worldwide, thousands of sold out concerts across the globe, and his own signature line of Fender guitars. Since the release of his 1986 break-out album “Strong Persuader”, Cray has performed and recorded alongside Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Bonnie Raitt and John Lee Hooker.  Cray was recently inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame at the age of 57; making him the youngest living legend to receive the prestigious honour.

In addition to his London Blues Fest concert at the Shepherd’s Bush Empire on June 26th, Cray will also perform more UK concerts at Glasgow 02 ABC (June 28),  Birmingham Town Hall (June 29), Warrington Pyramid and Parr Hall (June 30), Holmfirth Picturedrome (July 2), Reading Sub89 (July 3) and Brighton Concorde 2 (July 4). Damn Vandals to release album Done for desire

Damn Vandals
Album: ‘Done For Desire’

Released: 23rd July
On Sexy Beast - Sexybeast012

Available via CD plus
iTunes and all major download sites

‘Done For Desire’ is the debut album by Damn Vandals, following on from the highly acclaimed ‘Beautiful Mind’ EP, which garnered passionate support across radio and print media, including being made Shaun Keaveny’s ‘Record of the Week’ on his BBC6 Music Breakfast Show. It’s produced by Julian Simmons, whose credits include Midlake, The Phenomenal Handclap Band, Ed Sheeran, Guillemots, and Goldheart Assembly.

George Bernard Shaw called dancing ‘The vertical expression of a horizontal desire legalized by music’, and this theme of desire, albeit in myriad forms, unites the music on this album. Whether for sex, power, possessions, knowledge, pleasure, destruction or change, the lyrics of Jack Kansas wryly explore consequences over an evocative and mesmerising soundtrack.

The deep and powerful distinctive vocals of Jack Kansas have drawn comparisons with David Bowie, Mark Lanegan, Jim Morrison and Matt Berninger of The National. He stands atop the bridge of a mighty vessel steered by the rhythm section of Adam Kilemore Gardens (bass) and Chris Christianson (drums), while Frank Pick’s soaring, haunting guitar sits in the Crow’s Nest navigating via the stars. But hey, don’t just take our word for it, this small cross-section of quotes speak for themselves:

‘Another masterpiece from Damn Vandals, the UK’s most exciting band today….The discovery of a perfect album – one that truly is all killer/no filler – is not an everyday occurrence, and it is not something to be taken lightly…‘Done For Desire’ is a perfect album.

No hyperbole. No bullsh*t….I’m done, too, with comparisons to other artists of the past, the present, or the future. This is Damn Vandals.’ Mass Movement

‘The must see new band….Damn Vandals have something that a great deal of bands seem to lack…and every track leaves the listener stunned and desperate for more….you’ll find a great deal to love about the contagious sounds of those Damn Vandals.’ Rhythm and Booze 10/10

‘Awesome proper rock!’ Chris Hawkins, BBC 6Music‘

Great track!’ Tom Robinson, BBC 6Music

‘Beautiful Mind would make even the biggest fan of Echo & The Bunnymen remove their warped vinyl of ‘Porcupine’ from their record player, as the Damn Vandals could be their new favourite band…tingles my taste-buds.’ Artrocker

‘Outstanding….Damn Vandals, are worthy of the hype. Roll on the album.’ Shout 4 Music

‘I’m marking my diary to make sure I get the album as soon as possible, it’s that infectious! If we gave marks out of 5 on the ‘One to Watch’ features – this would get 5. Definitely a band to watch out for!’ Guitar Café

‘Each track beautifully constructed, darkly melodic, salaciously sinister….Damn Vandals saturate senses, bewitch, true tale tellers weaving atmosphere, wreaking havoc as they go, with incredible musicianship and illuminating lyricism.’ Mudkiss

‘These Vandals are a more hip and dangerous younger brother of Echo and the Bunnymen, a younger brother who has gone out on the lash with The Jesus and Mary Chain.’ Beard Rock

‘Blimey what a corker of an EP it is ….Unabashed, ballsy and full of charisma, this is enough to whet the appetite but roll on the summer when the debut album lands. A barnstormer of an EP, showcasing a well and truly mind-blowing band.’ Room Thirteen
