T in the Park 2014 - Saturday Review

T in the Park 2014 festival Saturday Review

T in the Park 2014 festival Saturday Review

We arrived at Balado (for the very last time due to it moving site) to grey clouds and the imminent arrival of rain but that wasn't letting anyone's spirits become dampened, no matter how soggy they may be about to get. As usual, the atmosphere was a buzz with anticipation of the fantastic Saturday line up. With so many talented artists participating this year, Music Mafia are bringing you what we considered the best of the best.

Starting off we were heading over to the main stage when I was distracted by the music coming out of the BBC Introducing Stage where Brown Bear were the first act up and what a way to start. This Scottish based band were a brilliant choice to kick things off. Exuding energy, Brown Bear had the crowd bouncing along with their fresh indie rock songs and lead singer, Matt Hickman's distinctive vocals leaves you wanting more. You can understand why they were chosen to support The Libertines recent gig at Hyde Park. Check out their latest single Dead or Alive or the hauntingly melodic Olive Grove single to see why you should be keeping an ear out for these guys. You won't be disappointed.

Next up for us was a Liverpool favourite, Circa Waves in King Tuts Wah Wah Tent. Lead singer, Keiran Shudall has definitely matured in both music style and song writing over the last few years and although I absolutely loved the Fly With Vampire days, I am totally impressed with Circa Waves. New single Young Chasers and Stuck in my Teeth are an indication of why these guys are being heralded as the next big thing and are in such demand and its safe to say a true indie pop band has been born because of Keiran not willing to give up on his dream. With comparisons to The Libertines and The Strokes, they certainly have all the stage presence of a band that has been been around for a lot longer than 16 months. With an extremely busy schedule during festival time, supporting The Libertines and going on tour in November, there's no excuse to not catch them somewhere in the UK over the next few months.

Another young up and coming artist who we previously reviewed at this years Soundcity Liverpool, Chlöe Howl. A talented young singer songwriter whose vocals and lyrics surpass her 19 years of age. With a confident stage presence from the outset this young singer showcased powerful vocals with a touch of heartfelt mellowness when needed all wrapped up  with her 80's syntho pop style with a modern contemporary twist.

Next up was come back disco queen, Sophie Ellis-Bextor, who last appeared at T in the Park 18 years ago. With a new album out, Wanderlust, Sophie showcased her new album which has a slightly darker, more grown up sound and I have to admit, I preferred. Many of the tracks still have the upbeat pop style that has become synonymous with her music but with a rockier edge to them. I loved Love is a Camera,  fairytale about a witch who steals souls using a camera and 13 Little Dolls, a doozy of a song with a fast tempo and catchy lyrics that you find yourself singing later on that day.  With a quick on stage change of outfit and a few wolf whistles from the crowd, the disco queen emerged to wow the crowd with her extensive back catalogue, including Take Me Home and the huge hit Murder on the Dance Floor to name but a few. I think its safe to say that Sophie Ellis Better enjoyed her return to T in the Park just as much as her fans did.

Carrying on with the dancier theme, we found Clean Bandit at the Radio 1 stage later that day with their fusion of funky dance, syntho pop and classical music. With one track blending flawlessly into the next they provided a good hour of fun and upbeat music including AandE, the infectious Running Around and of course show closer, their number one hit Rather Be. Even with the grey skies, they managed to lighten up the day with their unique style.

Festival veterans and one of the original Indie legends James took to the main stage for a hour of crowd surfing, manic dancing, old favourites and brand new tracks from their new album La Petite Mort. There's not much you can say about James that hasn't been said already so how about they were absolutely amazing. After 20 odd years in the business, they still clearly love doing what they do and it shines out across the main stage area. Front man Tim Booths interaction with the crowd, zealous dancing and general fabulousness makes these a must to see at any chance you can get. Even suffering from "man flu" doesn't stop him. Ok his voice wasn't at full par because of it, but he refuses auto tuning so kudos to him for being real and still managing to be the bundle of energy we have all come to love. Playing new single Curse Curse along with Moving On and Frozen Britain from their new album, some might say that concentrating on new material may be a bit risque for an hour set, but they totally pulled it off. Mixing in Come Home, Laid and after a democratic vote by the crowd, Sit Down. Only quibble is the predictability of the crowd themselves. James have a vast back catalogue so give them a break and if you get to vote again.....choose the alternative. Thankfully no one sat down this time!!

Pharrell Williams arrived on stage to huge cheers and instantly started a high energy set with an array of hits including NERD classics, Daft Punk collaboration Get Lucky and of course his massive single Happy. No one was still during his set including Pharrell himself who wasn't going to let a "bit" of rain stop him entertaining the crowd.

Between the two Saturday closers it was hard to choose who to see, so we had to split them up. Calvin Harris was on our first leg and boy are we glad we did it that way round. Who would have ever guessed that he would have Will Smith, yep that's right The Fresh Prince of Bell Air, to introduce him. Would have been nice for someone to tell him he was in Kinross, not Glasgow, but seeing as he travelled a whole lot of miles to get here , we'll forgive him for being about 30 miles out. Calvin Harris performed a fantastic set with the Fresh Prince by his side partying away to his greatest hits and so so many fireworks it was hard to tear ourselves away to from the party atmosphere to go and see one of our favourites a Elbow over at the Radio 1 stage.

Elbow performed a wonderfully chilled out set with all the classics we know and love including Bones of You and One Day Like This as well as some new material released this year. New York Morning being a particular favourite of mine. Front man Guy Garvey is an amazing performer and holds the crowd in the palm of his hand during each song and always makes you feel like he's talking to old friends when he interacts with the crowd and I'm glad we managed to wind down our Saturday in his company....the perfect ending to a perfect festival day.

Biffy Clyro,Calvin Harris and Pharrell Williams announced for T in the Park

Biffy Clyro,Calvin Harris and Pharrell Williams announced for T in the Park

Biffy Clyro,Calvin Harris and Pharrell Williams announced for T in the Park

After last year’s glorious 20th year sun-kissed celebrations, T in the Park is back and set to enter its third decade with another unmissable weekend featuring some of the world’s biggest artists. DF Concerts and founding partner Tennent’s Lager are thrilled to announce a stellar cast of acts which are Balado-bound this summer, and sure to wow the 85,000-strong daily crowd over 11th – 13th July.

Homegrown heroes Biffy Clyro and Calvin Harris will close the Main Stage at the festival for the very first time, becoming the first Scottish acts to do so in 13 years with what will be their biggest ever shows on home soil. Biffy Clyro’s 10th Balado outing will see them become the artist which has played the festival the most times. Man of the moment Pharrell Williams is sure to be another highlight, and DF Concerts have also today announced a further array of top acts which will join previously announced Arctic Monkeys and Paolo Nutini as well Biffy Clyro, Calvin Harris and Pharrell Williams on the T in the Park 2014 bill:

Biffy Clyro are T in the Park fan favourites, and they cite their very first performance on the T Break Stage back in 1999 as a defining factor in the band being signed. An incredible 2013 saw the band named Best British Band at the NME Awards and debut at no. 1 with their Opposites album (which achieved the best reviews of the band’s career). They headline the T in the Park Main Stage for the first time this July in what will be their 10th appearance at the festival, and as the fields of Balado ring out once again with the sound of “Mon the Biff!”, it’ll surely be a special moment for band and fans alike.

Global Superstar Calvin Harris will be one of the highlights for T in the Parkers. A Grammy award-winning, multi-talented DJ, songwriter, performer and producer, Calvin’s no. 1 album 18 Months has to date sold over 750,000 copies in the UK alone, along with over 35 million singles worldwide. 18 Months also made chart history by scoring the most Top 10 singles from one album, with 9 UK top 10 singles including Nothing feat. Florence Welch and the massive We Found Love feat. Rihanna. Last year he became the first DJ to win a prestigious Ivor Novello award and will close T in the Park’s Main Stage for the first time this summer.

Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter/producer and man of the moment Pharrell Williams is one of the most successful and prolific artists to emerge during the last decade, as part of the The Neptunes, N.E.R.D., and as a collaborator and solo star in his own right. He featured on the two biggest selling singles of 2013 - Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines (producer, co-songwriter and featured artist), and Daft Punk’s Get Lucky which he co-wrote and fronted. This year looks set to be just as successful, with Pharrell picking up the Producer of the Year Award at the 2014 Grammys, and his hotly anticipated new album G I R L – which features the no. 1 smash hit Happy - due out next month.

Ed Sheeran is one of the most in-demand singer-songwriters to emerge from the UK music scene in recent years. With an Ivor Novello and Grammy nomination under his belt, he’s sure to inspire mass sing-alongs with his anthemic tunes.

Nominated for the Best British Male at this year’s Brit Awards after receiving a Mercury Music Prize nomination his debut self-titled album in 2013, Jake Bugg’s ever-broadening musical palette saw him produce an outstanding follow-up to his debut with Shangri-La. He’s a welcome edition to the T in the Park bill this summer.

2014 has started with a bang for Ellie Goulding. Her million-selling album Halcyon Days reached no.1 in the UK’s Official Albums Chart. Selling out her 2014 UK arena tour and with total sales now topping over three million albums and fifteen million singles, Ellie Goulding’s star is set to soar at Balado as she joins the T in the Park line-up this July.

Elbow return to Balado, headlining the BBC Radio 1 Stage. After winning the prestigious Mercury Music Prize in 2008 with the glorious, triple–platinum selling The Seldom Seen Kid, they picked up the BRIT Award for Best British Group the following year along with 2 Ivor Novello Songwriting Awards. In 2012, the band composed the theme to the BBC's coverage of the London 2012 Olympics, before playing to a global audience of 750 million at the closing ceremony. Their hotly anticipated sixth studio album The Take Off and Landing of Everything is released on March 10th.

In the last 12 months, Disclosure have been nominated for four Brit Awards in 2014, sold-out venues across the world and received critical-acclaim with their debut album Settle. In their return to Balado this summer, they are sure to bring the party vibe to T in the Park 2014.

Bursting out of London’s underground music scene early last year, Rudimental are a pioneering melting-pot collective who rocketed to fame when their single Feel the Love topped the UK singles chart in 2012. At the start of 2013 they returned to the number 1 spot with Waiting All Night – which last week won Best British Single at the BRITs - swiftly following up with a number 1 debut album.

Fresh from winning British Breakthrough Act at the BRIT Awards 2014 and the following the success of their number one platinum selling debut album Bad Blood, Bastille will return to T in the Park this summer with a plethora of great songs that are both absorbing and genre-defining.

Since his last T in the Park appearance in 2012, Ben Howard has scooped two BRIT Awards, for British Breakthrough Act and British Male. His debut album Every Kingdom was a top five hit going platinum in the UK, and he’s sure to be a big hit on his return to T in the Park.

Pixies made a triumphant return in 2004 following an eleven-year hiatus, wowing fans and critics at live shows around the world. Last year, the group released their first new song in over a decade – Bagboy – on their website to the delight of their fans, with the release racking up than one million downloads/streams in the space of a month.

A pioneer of the Stockholm underground turned icon of the global EDM scene, Steve Angello returns to T in the Park to close the Radio 1 Stage on the Friday night. From the billboard charts to the club floor, he is firmly at the top of his game having taken the reigns at famous stages across the globe and boasting annual residencies for Ibiza’s most prestigious night spots, and recently joined BBC Radio 1’s impressive Residency line-up.

Since forming in Manchester in 1982, James's enduring creativity and musical legacy has made them one of the most influential British indie bands.  During their music career now spanning over 30 years, they have released 12 studio albums and sold 13 million albums worldwide. James’ biggest hits include Sit Down, She’s A Star, Laid and Getting Away With It (All Messed Up), with an impressive 20 Top 40 singles in the UK under their belt. Having spent most of 2013 in the studio with Max Dingel (The Killers, Muse), the band's new album La Petite Mort is set to be released via BMG/Cooking Vinyl’ after 2nd June.

Tinie Tempah’s multi-platinum selling debut album Disc-Overy took the world by storm, before its hotly anticipated follow-up Demonstration was released last November featuring an A-list of collaborators including Dizzee Rascal, Paloma Faith, Emeli Sandé and Naughty Boy. A glittering array of prestigious awards - including multiple MOBOs, BRITs, Urban Music Awards, a UK Festival Award and the Ivor Novello for Best Contemporary Song for debut single Pass Out - are a testament to his major critical acclaim as well as his huge popularity as one of the freshest hip-hop stars around right now.

Now a regular at some of the world’s largest festivals and collaborating with producers such as Sebastian Ingrosso, Calvin Harris on and OneRepublic, Alesso has had successive Beatport chart toppers with debut single Nillionaire and to the dark and energized Raise Your Head. He topped the UK singles chart with his collaboration with Calvin Harris, Under Control, and scored chart success once again on his Grammy nominated remix of OneRepublic’s If I Lose Myself. Having already spun against a backdrop of different skylines on various stages across the world, the producer/DJ is destined for greatness and set to make his T in the Park debut this summer when he takes to the decks on the Radio 1 Stage before Steve Angello, for a Friday night dance extravaganza.

Glasgow art-pop four-piece Franz Ferdinand were catapulted to global stardom with the release of their classic, era-encapsulating self-titled debut album in 2004. The band returned with a new album Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action last summer, with critics hailing the band’s trademark lyrical detail, heavyweight hooks, and uncanny ability to marry artistic sensibility with pop punch.

Glasgow’s alt-rock powerhouse Twin Atlantic - whose celebrated full-length debut Free went silver in the UK – return to T in the Park to cement their incendiary live reputation.

You Me At Six released their long awaited fourth album Cavalier Youth at the end of January. With three gold albums, a sold out Wembley show, countless tours and festivals, this year is theirs for the taking and they can rightfully claim their position as one of the biggest rock bands in the UK.

Tame Impala’s second album Lonerism won international plaudits for its simplistic beauty and boundless creativity, hailed as album of the year by NME and Rolling Stone in their native Australia in 2012. After embarking on a phenomenal sold out world tour at the end of 2012, the band are back on the live circuit and set to return to T in the Park this July.

Manchester quartet The 1975’s eponymous debut album topped the UK Album Charts last September when it entered at no.1. Their infectious anthems where alt.rock explosions meet electro-pop grooves are the perfect summer festival soundtrack, and are sure to inspire mass sing-alongs when they make their T in the Park return.

London Grammar are one of the biggest breakthrough acts of 2013. In the past 12 months, they’ve had their first BRIT nomination for Best Breakthrough Act, and seen their highly acclaimed debut album If You Wait named Album Of The Year by iTunes and hailed amongst the best albums of 2013 by BBC 6 Music, Sunday Times, Line Of Best Fit and Clash, to name a few.

In 2012, a year before his first solo material had even seen the light of day, John Newman scored a no. 1 single, and had written and sung on two of the biggest dance hits to storm the UK charts in years: Rudimental’s massive number one Feel The Love and the powerfully anthemic follow up Not Giving In. Last year, he released his first solo material, topping the charts with debut solo single Love Me Again and album Tribute.

Sam Smith came to the fore featuring on fellow T in the Park act Disclosure’s breakout hit Latch and went on to work with Naughty Boy on the MOBO-winning, no.1 hit single La La La. His own debut single Money On My Mind topped the UK singles chart on Sunday, and with his debut album due in the Spring, plus having been named the BRITs Critics Choice and topping the coveted BBC Sound of 2014 Poll, it’s shaping up to be a big year for the singer-songwriter.

Half Scottish, half Swedish singer-songwriter Nina Nesbitt released her debut album, Peroxide, last week, with the record entering the UK charts on Sunday at no. 11. Destined for big things this year, she was named 'Singer/Songwriter New Artist of the Year' by iTunes at the tail-end of 2012.

Clean Bandit’s culture clash of bass, beats and soaring strings evokes memories of classic Massive Attack. When they released their first single Mozart’s House on their own label it caught the attention of DJs Nick Grimshaw, Annie Mac, Rob Da Bank, Huw Stephens, John Kennedy, Eddie Temple Morris and Fearne Cotton, before they hit the top spot with Rather Be feat. Jess Glynne. They make their hotly anticipated T in the Park debut this summer.

Grace Chatto (cello), Clean Bandit said: “We haven't actually ever played a festival in Scotland, but we have done a headline show in Glasgow and supported Disclosure and Basement Jaxx in Edinburgh. The Scottish audiences are always up for a good time which makes the shows so fun for us. We've heard great things about T in the Park, and to be playing on such a big stage like the Radio 1 stage is huge! We can’t wait!”

Scottish indie rockers The Twilight Sad also join the bill. James Graham, Twilight Sad, singer, said: "We're delighted & excited to be part of the line-up at T in the Park this year. T was the first festival I ever attended and we, The Twilight Sad, all went together even before we became a band. Therefore it's a festival that means a lot to us. The T in the Park crowd is one of the best crowds in the world and we can't wait to play for them.”

An impressive line-up of electronic artists will take to the decks in the Slam Tent, including Sven Vath, Dave Clarke, Carl Craig, Magda, Len Faki, Pan-Pot, Slam, Julio Bashmore, George Fitzgerald and Levon Vincent, with more to be announced.

With a line-up which already boasts the biggest bands from across the globe, musical icons, the hottest British breakthrough talent around, superstar DJs, and homegrown headliners, and many, many more still to be announced – T in the Park 2014 is off to a soaring start. Fans can make sure they’re part of the legendary Balado crowd when T in the Park 2014 tickets go on sale at 9am on Friday 28th February from www.tinthepark.com or www.ticketmaster.co.uk or 08444 999 990.

Elbow Live from Jodrell Bank - The Review

Elbow Live at Jodrell Bank

Elbow Live from Jodrell Bank - The Review

Only at Jodrell Bank would you find an array of live music and science displays all overlooked by the awe inspiring world famous, grade 1 listed telescope Lovell and on Saturday it was Elbow's turn to headline a sold out concert here.

With various artists performing prior to Elbow, including opening act, Willy Mason, whose country songs about love and life teamed with his rich deep vocals and slow southern drawl created quite the atmosphere from the grey skies.

Lianne Le Havas created a more upbeat affair with some jazz and funk influenced numbers mixed in amongst a few songs about her ex boyfriend. She also performed some tracks from her new album, "Is Your Love Big Enough" including "They Could Be Wrong" which unfortunately saw her vocals being overpowered by the drums. All in all though it was a good set from a talented young singer whose personality and style flowed out over Jodrell Bank and brought a lot of enthusiatic cheers from the crowd.

Then we moved back to the sombre sets of country and acoustic again with Cherry Ghost, a male solo artist, who to be honest wasn't my thing, I'd had my fill of seriousness with Willy Mason, but the crowd seemed to appreciate his lyrics and to be fair, rich mellow vocals.

Finally we had some lively funked out music courtesy of Field Music, whose opening number was very reminiscent of Elton Johns, "Benny and the Jets". They followed this with 80's electro pop style and indie guitar riffs a plenty throughout the set. Judging by the sound from these guys I'd have to say they were influenced by Peter Gabriel and Prince and the New Power Generation, especially from the lead singer.

Finally it was the highlight of the night, the legends that are Elbow, renowned for their live performances, so to say I was excited to see them was quite possibly the understatement of the year and they did not disappoint in slightest, even though the rain became pretty torrential, it didn't stop them and us "Jodrellites" having a brilliant time. With amazing musicians and lead singer Guy Garvey's fabulously clear, powerful vocals as well as exuding a massive personality and interacting with the crowd as much as possible, Elbow rocked Joodrell Bank to it's very core. With fireworks and images of the band on stage and various galaxies/planets being projected onto Lovell, while singing firm favourites, including "The Bones of You", "Build a Rocket Boys" which was dedicated to the inner child in all us Jodrellites and "Mirror Ball" which saw the giant disco ball light up the stage. The atmosphere and feeling in Jodrell Bank was second to none. This is definitely the best live band I'd seen in a very long time and will always remember the atmosphere that Elbow created. So thank you Elbow for a great time, this is one Jodrellite who will always remember it.

Two live concerts in June at The University of Manchester’s Jodrell Bank Observatory in Cheshire

Hands-on science workshops, lectures and experiments also included in the ticket price

Tickets for Elbow’s show on 23rd June at Live From Jodrell Bank sold out in a remarkable 90 minutes and the band have confirmed their hand-picked supports for this very special show.  The North East’s finest musical sons Field Music have a unique talent for taking a range of different influences and creating their own, unique pocket symphonies.  Ivor Novello award winners Cherry Ghost are some of the best contemporary songwriters around whilst Lianne La Havas will be showcasing the folk and soul of her much anticipated debut album ‘Is Your Love Big Enough’.  Willy Mason’s lo-fi, alt-folk completes a day of outstanding musical entertainment.

Mercury Music and Brit Award winners Elbow, formed in 1991, have five top 20 studio albums under their belt including the phenomenal multi platinum The Seldom Seen Kid and most recent Build A Rocket Boys. The band have also been commissioned to compose the BBC 2012 London Olympics theme tune.

I am a space nut. My cat is even named after the woman who discovered pulsars, and Patrick Moore does all the trailers and announcements for my 6 music radio show. So as you would imagine, playing alongside the local icon of space exploration fills me with cosmic glee.” - Guy Garvey – Elbow

The following day, Paul Weller and supporting cast will ramp up the volume at this iconic setting.  Modfather Paul Weller is an internationally acclaimed star whose song-writing is a huge part of British Culture, throughout his musical career from his early days in The Jam, to his much loved hits with The Style Council, as well as a solo career spanning over 20 years. With Brit Awards, Mercury Nominations and an Ivor Novello Award, Paul Weller has provided music lovers with hits such as The Changing Man, You Do Something To Me and Wake Up the Nation and will also be performing tracks from his new number 1 album ‘Sonik Kicks’.

"I’m excited to play Jodrell Bank, it’s always good to perform in unique places and this will be the most unique of them all!  It’s going to be a great show in a great space-age setting," – Paul Weller

Graham Coxon has been confirmed as the main support for Paul Weller’s show at the Jodrell Bank observatory and the Blur lead guitarist and solo artist is a welcome addition to what is shaping up to be a spectacular bill.  Graham releases his highly anticipated 8th solo album ‘A + E’ on 2nd April and his records mix alt-rock, folk and lo-fi with consummate ease.  Graham Coxon is revered by his musical peers being described by Noel Gallagher as ‘the most gifted guitarist of his generation’ and has previously collaborated with Paul Weller on the single ‘This Old Town’.
Graham recently picked up the Outstanding Contribution To Music Award with Blur at the NME Awards and his set will be the perfect prelude to the Modfather taking the stage.

‘Looking forward to catching up with some old chums at the Jodrell Bank Observatory, guitars akimbo!’ – Graham Coxon

Baxter Dury showcases the expertly constructed psychedelic pop joy of his ‘Happy Soup’ album.  His sharp portraits of odd ball characters and hook laden storytelling have marked him out as a wordsmith of some renown and his self professed ‘seaside psychadelia’ is a guaranteed crowd pleaser.
Collaborators of choice to the A-list, Little Barrie have also been added to a sonically charged line up.  Having worked with Primal Scream, The Chemical Brothers, Spiritualized and Paul Weller himself, the band’s lead guitarist Barrie Cadogan is often referred to as the greatest guitarist of his generation and his band bring their undiluted rock n’ roll swagger to Jodrell Bank for what is set to be an unforgettable live performance.

The Live From Jodrell Bank series sees some of the most innovative artists performing in this unique and dramatic setting, marrying science and music and bringing the audience superlative sounds from earth and beyond. The bands will even project visuals onto the 76 metre Lovell telescope.

Before the spectacular evening concerts and throughout each day, attendees will be able to participate in a fantastic range of hands-on experiments and workshops on site at Jodrell Bank. With full access to the magnificent Discovery centre included in every ticket, this is a great chance to find out more about the mind-blowing research happening at Jodrell Bank. Explore the wonders of the universe and find out for yourself why stargazing has enjoyed a massive resurgence in the past few years.

For over five decades, the giant Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank has been part of the Cheshire landscape and an internationally renowned landmark for astronomers.  Since the summer of 1957 it has been exploring the depths of outer space in a quest for knowledge. It remains one of the biggest and most powerful radio telescopes in the world, spending most of its time investigating cosmic phenomena that were undreamed of when it was first conceived.
