Sound City Liverpool 2015 - Friday Review

Soundcity Liverpool 2015 - Friday Review

Sound City Liverpool 2015 - Friday Review

This year the Bramley Dock site was what Sound City Liverpool 2015 was all about. Moving from multiple venues to consolidate the festival into one area of docklands north of the city centre is a gamble, but is one that had to be made to promote the continued growth of the festival and attract big name acts.

Getting there (or back) wasn't the easiest which has drawn some complaints from festival goers.

The laid on bus finished at 10pm so ignored the fact that thousands of people would be leaving after the headline acts finished, to either compete for a limited number of taxis, or start the half hour walk back to the city centre.

That aside once there the site was great the way it had been decorated and was easy to navigate with all the stages in a five or ten minute walk from each other, although this did give rise to some noise bleed across different performances. It could have been laid out slightly better and used more of the warehouse space as only the Baltic Stage was in one of the large structures, but then this may in itself have been detrimental as I think it was with YAK's performance. This loud rock outfit with a touch of psychedelia didn't struggle to get themselves heard as they filled the venue with their sound but possibly the acoustics of the gigantic warehouse they played in let them down.

Moving on to catch some of KOF at the Cargo stage, I found him to be engaging with the audience with his upbeat music. His alternative souls style is easy to listen to and he aims to spread a more modern message with his music. His backing band had one great character in the lead guitarist, but some of the others were a tad too moody which didn't compliment his performance.

Spector on the Atlantic stage tried to warm up the audience with their energetic enthusiastic performances of their Killer'sesq music, but this was marred with smatterings of pretentiousness.

Whilst singing “Celestine”, Macpherson (vocals) stopped the performance to try and rouse the audience more before restarting the song. This had little effect. When announcing “Chevy Thunder” a handful of fans, stood at the front, whooped with joy, understandably so as it is one of their better releases, but not all the audience were as receptive. It was a shame, maybe it was the time they were on, or the chill wind coming up the Mersey that sapped enthusiasm from the crowd.

Iceage on the Baltic stage, these Danish rockers were loud and moody, maybe a bit too moody. It may just have been this performance, but they finished early with the lead singer saying “that's all were doing tonight” dropping his mic and walking off.

Close Talker on at the Cavern Stage, an energetic 4 piece Canadian altindie/ rock group showed how friends who are gelled with each other can make great solid sounding music. Having formed in 2012 they gained more exposure through being finalists in a CBC competition for best Canada's Best New Artist in 2013. Seeing how good these guys were I've have see who they lost to to understand why.

Taffy I must admit was stumbled upon whilst passing The North stage and was one of Fridays best, if not the best, performing groups. Their faultless playing incorporated an excellent rendition of The Cures “Boys Don't Cry “ which captured many passersby who paused and enjoyed these Japanese rockers. They also must have had the happiest drummer of the festival as he beamed throughout the set. The only downside was the vocals of lead singer, Iris, were drowned out, which went unnoticed by the sound mixer who was happily enjoying the performance.

Everything Everything on the Atlantic Stage I found their live performance although promising with their energy, was just not my thing, and did not live up to their recordings. Inbetween their plugs for their new album (‘Get To Heaven’ ) I found myself checking Facebook to pass the time before going for a wander.

Once The Vaccines hit the Atlantic stage the large crowd were ready for some high powered music. This was delivered to them with a professionally honed performance including tracks from the new album English Grafitti. One of the few bands to utilise the massive screen behind them they provided a visual experience to match the performance.

All in all not a bad first day of the Soundcity festival and aside from certain hiccups like the aforementioned travel, the long queues for the toilets (must have forgotten the urinals), plus overpriced food and drink that are commonplace for such events I would easily return to the location next year especially if they had a better transportation links. I would also advise people to get a weekend pass as that would also allow you free movement in and out of the site which is very handy when you can pop over the road to The Bramley Moore pub (which soon got crowded) for cheaper food and drink.

Ibiza and Mallorca Rocks announce Franz Ferdinand, Bastille and more

Ibiza and Mallorca Rocks
Ibiza and Mallorca Rocks guarantee hot weather, cool accommodation and 16 weeks of phenomenal live gigs under the Balearic stars.  Joining the already impressive summer line up are Bastille - the hottest new breakthrough act making their Rocks debut.  Chase and Status and Tinie Tempah - two of the defining artists of the past 5 years coming back with new albums and bigger shows plus one of the most important guitar bands of the decade, Franz Ferdinand. Four chart-topping exceptional live acts for back-to-back headline shows in the Balearics.

Bastille, fronted by UK singer/songwriter Dan Smith, just released debut album Bad Blood and went straight to the top of the UK album charts, with No.2 single Pompeii taking over the airwaves across Europe.  A ‘must see’ live act on the festival scene this summer, Rocks is delighted to have Bastille on the bill.  Support comes from hotly tipped and indefinable Bristol mob The Other Tribe.  Championed by both indie and electronic music lovers, the band cross musical boundaries and their illustrious new single Skirts is as infectious as their live set.

Bastille’s Dan Smith said: We’re really looking forward to getting out to Ibiza and Mallorca for the first time. Being able to play a gig and then go to the beach will be a massive novelty, and it’ll be nice to see a bit of proper summer and try to head to some of the massive clubs as well. I hear the Rocks gigs are great and we've been told they throw a pretty decent party so it should be a lot of fun."
Having first smashed the charts with their killer hit Take Me Out and their self-titled debut album in 2002, Glasgow boys Franz Ferdinand are back, and Balearic bound. They’ve ticked off a Mercury Music Prize, BRIT Awards for Best British Group and Best British Rock Act, NME Awards, multiple Grammy Award nominations, sold over 3 million albums worldwide and are soon to release their hugely anticipated fourth studio album. This band were a huge influence on Ibiza Rocks, helping fuel the concept of promoting gigs for 'dance kids who rock and rock kids who dance.' Rocks is exceptionally proud to be bringing one of the world’s best live bands to make their debut on the famous open-air Rocks stage in Mallorca and Ibiza this summer.
Alex Kapranos said: “This is the first time we've been to Ibiza Rocks, so are looking forward to it. Paul's been and told us all about it, so we're expecting a great crowd there and Mallorca.”
Chase and Status are undoubtedly one of the most exciting and successful British bands of the past decade. Their double platinum, second album No More Idols sold over 600,000 copies in the UK alone and spawned over 2 million single sales. They were the biggest selling band in the UK in 2011, behind Coldplay, sold out tour after tour in the UK, Europe, US and Australia and played live at 36 festivals around the world last summer. Phenomenal track Big Man with Liam Bailey has provided a taster of what’s to come from their highly anticipated third album, due for release in summer.

Chase and Status said: “We’re excited to bring our live show to Ibiza Rocks again this summer – the crowds at Ibiza and Mallorca Rocks are always amazing!”
Tinie Tempah is no stranger to the Rocks stage and always puts on an extra special show – last time he performed he bound off stage and stunned fans by reappearing to perform from their bedroom balcony.   Since becoming the undisputed breakout star of 2010, Tinie’s career has soared. Debut single Pass Out exploded around the globe and follow up tracks Frisky, Written in the Stars and Miami 2 Ibiza all had the same effect. Debut album Disc-Overy is still regarded as one of the most refreshing and confident UK debuts of all time.  Back to headline, live under the stars, Tinie Tempah is sure to showcase new material from his highly anticipated second album Demonstration and to put on a high-energy show packed with smash hits and more surprises.

Bastille, Franz Ferdinand, Chase and Status, Tinie Tempah and The Other Tribe join previously announced acts
Jake Bugg, Rizzle Kicks, The Vaccines, Example, Ellie Goulding, Dizzee Rascal, Foals, Palma Violets, Jagwar Maand Redlight on the incredible line-up of chart-toppers and festival favourites who are Balearic bound this summer.MTV UK will be the exclusive TV host, bringing millions of people closer to the action when it broadcasts the live footage on MTV Music and MTV Live HD.
More ‘must see’ solo stars, bands and cutting edge DJ’s will be announced over the coming weeks, so fans can forget the mud and rain this summer and start looking forward to the gig, and holiday of a lifetime in the sun-soaked Balearics.

Evolution Festival returns with a stellar first wave of artists

Evolution Festival Newcastle Gateshead Quayside

Evolution Festival returns with a stellar first wave of artists

Evolution Festival returns to the North East with another outstanding line-up featuring the most influential and exciting names in popular music right now.  Evolution has been highly acclaiming for delivering fantastic line-ups at unbeatable prices and this year a host of amazing acts will perform for under £40 for the weekend.

Paloma Faith is the queen of retro soul and sassy pop and this this complete (and petite!) performer commands the stage with her rabble rousing shows.

Performing tracks from her two highly acclaimed albums ‘Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful’ and ‘Fall To Grace’ Paloma has been nominated for Best Female Solo Artist and Best British Album at the Brit Awards.

The Vaccines are arguably the best live band in the country and have been nominated as one of the best live acts at the Brit Awards.  The band are also shortlisted in the Best British Band and Best Album categories at the upcoming NME Awards.  Their ‘Come Of Age’ album entered the chart at number 1 and they continue to spearhead the UK’s garage / indie rock movement

Jake Bugg has taken the music world by storm over the last 12 months, seemingly appearing from nowhere to becoming one of the most acclaimed artists in the country.  His eponymous debut album reached number 1 in the charts and has been a permanent fixture in the top 10 ever since.  This 18 year old somehow manages to sound retro and yet absolutely modern and his set is sure to be one of the defining Evolution moments.

One of the UK’s most singular and compelling songwriters Ellie Goulding has found international acclaim with her albums ‘Lights’ and ‘Halcyon’.  Halcyon saw Ellie laying her emotions bare, a journey out of heartbreak and into hope.  Back on track her live performances earned rave reviews in 2012 and this is the first opportunity to catch Ellie at a festival in 2013.

Rudimental are the new drum and bass dons, tearing up clubs where ever they perform and this is a rare chance to catch them live as they bring the sound of the dance floor to Evolution.  Bastille have been cited as the most exciting thing to happen in indie for a long time.  Fronted by Dan Smith the band quietly built a fan base before releasing their debut album Bad Blood which has spawned a number of big radio records over the past few months.

London based duo, AlunaGeorge are the name on all the critics lips in 2013.  Having been together for barely a year, this talented duo’s infectious mixes are immersed in sweet harmonies and electronic charm.  Nominated for both the BBC Sound of 2013 and the Brits Critics Choice award, catch them at Evolution before they go stratospheric.

The Strypes are undoubtedly the hottest band in the world right now.  This four piece rhythm and blues band from Ireland viciously hammer out their no-nonsense blues repertoire and have already met with critical acclaim from greats such as Jeff Beck and Paul Weller for their outstanding live shows.  This is a must not miss performance at Evolution.

Headlining the dance stage are two of the most gargantuan names in electronic music Sub Focus and Modestep both of whom will be performing live.

Sub Focus is one of the superstars of bass music, a production obsessive whose attention to detail is matched only by the raw spectacle of his incredible live show.  A bone fide cross over artist Sub Focus is that rare thing in dance
music, someone who can keep one foot in the underground and still have credible radio hits all of which he will be performing for the Evolution crowd.

Modestep fused dubstep and electronic rock to devastating effect on their debut album ‘Evolution Theory’.  Their sound is a hybrid of heavy rock riffs, brutal synths and bludgeoning synth breaks, all connected together by soulful pop led vocal melodies.  Modestep slay audiences wherever they play.

Other acts confirmed for Evolution include the 21st century soul of rising local star Lulu James, Nas protégé Arlissa, the haunting acoustic indie and folk of Sunderland’s The Lake Poets, Grime superstar Lethal Bizzle, Radio 1 and 1xtra supremo MistaJam and drum and bass / breakstep overlord Zinc.

Loadstar, Delta Heavy, Dismantle, Decibel, Drenge, Bondax, Gorgon City, P Money, Chroma, Gentlemen Jonny,Eliza and the Bear and Rossi Noise will also perform and the North East finest music festival.

Evolution is a snapshot of everything that is vital in contemporary music right now and continues to strive to bring the best artists to the North East to perform in front of the UK’s most rapturous festival audience.  At £29.50 for a day ticketor £39.50 for the weekend, Evolution continues its tradition of providing an amazing show for an unbeatable price.

As usual we are proud to have such a strong mix of today's heavy weights and future stars. The Vaccines and The Horrors to co-headline new non-profit festival Chazzstock

Chazzstock festival

The Vaccines and The Horrors to co-headline new festival Chazzstock

CHAZZSTOCK FESTIVAL 2012 … NEVER TO BE FORGOTTEN
Chazzstock is a brand new music festival set up in memory of the much-loved, young musician Charles Haddon.  Charles, otherwise known as Chazz, was the lead singer of cult synthpop band Ou Est Le Swimming Pooland sadly passed away in August 2010.
The festival takes place in the picturesque grounds of Stanford Hall in Lutterworth, Leicestershire on the 9-10th June 2012. Huge bands such as THE VACCINES, THE HORRORS and TRIBES will be performing over the weekend alongside some hot new talent, with more special guests to be announced soon.
Charles’ dream was to hold his own festival in his parent’s back garden, which he always said he would have named Chazzstock. Now family and friends have banded together to create the perfect festival just as Chazz himself would have seen fit.
Chazzstock have also been inviting unsigned bands to put themselves forward to play at the festival, to encourage and support young and upcoming talent. All proceeds from the festival will go towards The Prince’s Trust, a youth charity that helps change young lives.
Ou est le party this summer? Waking up the Leicestershire countryside, in Stanford Hall's treasured stately grounds. Chazzstock… never to be forgotten on 9th and 10th June 2012.
Tickets start at £35 for a day pass. Camping is limited so book now to avoid disappointment. Tickets are available from: http://www.gigantic.com/gigantic/home_chazzstock.html

NME is excited to reveal the nominations for its prestigious NME Awards 2012 which take place at London’s O2 Academy Brixton on Wednesday 29 February. They can also reveal that Kasabian, and The Vaccines are amongst the performers on the night and that Florence Welch and The Horrors are gearing up for a very special collaboration. British comedy’s hottest new star, Jack Whitehall, is confirmed to host the awards, tickets for the iconic ceremony go on sale at 9am on Friday 3 February and are available at www.nme.com .
An incredible eight million votes have been cast this year for the 26 award categories, proving that the NME Awards 2012 is a ceremony that music fans nationwide are truly passionate about. Leading the nominations this year are Arctic Monkeys who are up for an unprecedented seven awards including Best British Band, Best Album and Best Track (for ‘The Hellcat Spangled Shalalala’).
Matt Helders, Arctic Monkeys: "We're up for all the big ones - we're very happy. We had a lot of fun making 'Suck It And See' and it's great to be up for Best Live Band. That's all we do - record or play live - so it's good to be recognised!"
Kasabian and The Horrors are set to fight Arctic Monkeys for the night’s biggest awards, with Kasabian up for three awards including Best British Band and Best Live Act and The Horrors up for Best British Band and Best Album. Despite not having an album out since 2009, Muse are nominated for Best British Band and Best Live Band whilst The Vaccines crown their incredible year with nominations for Best New Band and Best Album. Elsewhere, Florence + The Machine is up for Best Solo Artist, Best Track (for ‘Shake It Out’) and Florence herself is up for hottest female.
Florence Welch: "I'd be so excited to win an NME Award - I've never won one! I've only been once to the NME Awards ceremony and it's the drunkest I've ever been at an awards ceremony. I'm very surprised you're having me back. Glasvegas gave me some Buckfast and that was that."
Justin Young, The Vaccines: "It's awesome to be nominated. We've had an amazing year and it just seemed to get better and better. We were in this position this time last year where everything for us seemed to hinge on a set of predictions, so to come out with a record that's really connected with people and to be able to tour all over the world has been completely amazing."

As previously announced, Noel Gallagher is the recipient of the NME Awards 2012 Godlike Genius Award. He will also be vying for four other gongs on the night, including Best Solo Artist and Best Album for 'Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds'.

Coalition government duo David Cameron and Nick Clegg once again attract the wrath of NME readers, both are nominated for ‘Villain Of The Year’ alongside Liam Gallagher, Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga. Hero Of The Year will be fought out by Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys), Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters), Matt Bellamy (Muse), Noel Fielding and Noel Gallagher.
The NME Awards 2012 are thrilled to confirm comedy’s fastest rising star Jack Whitehall as this year’s host.  Having established himself as a prodigious talent on the UK comedy scene with sell out tour shows up and down the country and two British Comedy Award nominations to boot, he’s the perfect choice to keep a room of rowdy rock stars in check.  Referencing the infamous NME Awards 2006, hosted by Russell Brand, Jack commented: “It's brilliant to be able to host the NME awards I'm one step closer to having Bob Geldof call me a c*nt!”.
