Bestival announces even more acts - Skepta, Wiley and The Chuckle Brothers

With over 25 stages, revolutionary soundsystems, zombie love-ins, psychedelic woodland adventures, 24-hour free haircuts, and a host of dazzling new attractions, Bestival’s Summer of Love is already looking pretty damn fit. But as ever, we want to get everyone we love involved, including this rather sultry bunch of musical marvels that will have you rockin’ Robin Hill all weekend long this September 10-13.

Love commando Rob da Bank says: “I’m well excited with this new batch of acts we’re announcing tonight. With so many identikit festivals about with similar acts and bills I’m proud that 12 years on we don’t go with the flow. If the indie amazingness of Drenge isn’t your bag then grimy faceslaps from Skepta and Wiley might be, and if you’re insane and don’t like the legendary junglist brilliance of Roni Size and his live Reprazent show then perhaps, just perhaps, you’ll be singing ‘to me, to you, to me, to you’ whilst dancing in a pair of ill-fitting tropical shorts to the Chuckle Brothers. No matter what, there’s plenty more fish in the sea to come, as our Summer of Love really starts to heat up. See you down the front.”

Bringing on the love with big fat beats, we’ll have main stage appearances from grime pioneer Wiley, who completely smashed it as our secret guest in 2012, plus the unstoppable skank machine, Dub Pistols.

Dub Pistols legend Barry Ashworth commented: “The Highlight of the year for us will always be playing Bestival, this year we are back on the main stage, it doesn't get bigger than that, and if that’s not enough you can always catch me spinning tracks and drinking in the Sunday Best Cardboard Record Shop! There’s only one Bestival!”

Not quite true, Barry, there are two Bestivals, but we know what you mean! Big love to all our Canadian brethren! More Isle of Wight-based Bestival main stage action will come from cool chanteuse Gabrielle Aplin, sing-along faves Dodgy, and the Isle of Wight’s own Xockha and Yrslf.

Old blue, Bestival’s beloved Big Top will be playing host to some mighty sounds this summer, too, including the much requested return of Joseph Junior Adenuga AKA Skepta and an absolute must-see live set from drum n bass hero Roni Size and Reprazent. We’ll also have recently expanded noiseniks Drenge, our favourite scratch master DJ Yoda Presents: Breakfast of Champions, with his brand new hip-hop band busting up the Big Top live, and then the man himself will be taking on Bollywood for a typically special DJ set, and we’ll have one of the coolest bands ever to grace a festival, Sunday Best favourites, the utterly incomparable Kitty Daisy and Lewis.

Commenting on their latest Bestival appearance, Kitty Daisy and Lewis uttered as one: “We’re so excited to be coming to Bestival again this year, we always have a great time. Sunday Best know how to throw a festival!”

The Big Top will also welcome a high-voltage rock assault from Dinosaur Pile-Up, plus sets from Kero Kero Bonito, Lloyd Yates, Seafret and - we’re not sure it’s possible to express quite how excited we are about this - The Chuckle Brothers! Yes, it’ll be history in the making with be-mulleted slapstick to me, to you. CAN. NOT. WAIT.

As if all that wasn’t enough to get you all giddy with joy, he was one of the smash hits acts that started our summer in finest style at Common People, so we’re extremely pleased that turntable ninja, Jaguar Skills, will be joining us to destroy the dancefloor at The Port.

Things are really starting to hot-up in the Bestival bunker, as our Summer of Love draws ever closer, and we unveil news of yet another stellar act joining our jamboree. One of the most exciting stars to have emerged in the past couple of years, we are absolutely thrilled to announce that FKA twigs will be crossing the Solent to blow us all away this September 10-13, at Robin Hill Country Park.

Rob da Bank says: “I picked up a white label record by an artist called twigs in 2012 and started playing it on my Radio 1 show, with no idea who or what was creating this fantastic sound… Three years on and it’s exciting to see FKA twigs breaking through, still forging such a leftfield sound and winning! We can’t wait to welcome her to Bestival’s Summer of Love 2015… and I’ve still got that white label!” 

The consummate polymath, FKA twigs has recently announced her video-directorial debut for Glass and Patron, the lead track taken from her forthcoming EP, which moves the story on from where her Mercury Prize nominated LP1 left off, exploring her stunningly unique brand of slo-mo RandB and sylphlike vocals. With a truly astonishing live presence, her Bestival show is a guaranteed must-see event, alongside unmissable appearances from The Chemical Brothers, Underworld, Duran Duran, Tame Impala, The Jacksons, Annie Mac, Jungle, Jurassic 5 and lots more.

Bestival is coming with the inaugural line-up for our Canadian venture. Featuring Bestival friends old and new, and a healthy dose of kick-ass acts from the UK, Canada and worldwide, nurturing the freshest, new, local talent, and showcasing some world famous showstoppers, it’s a statement of intent; and that intent is to party all weekend long! So much more than just a music festival, Bestival will be a creative wonderland set upon the iconic and picturesque Hanlan’s Point Beach, Toronto Island on June 12th and 13th. Bestival Toronto is a partnership between Bestival, Canadian promoters Embrace and SFX Entertainment. 

Bestival curator Rob da Bank says: “To say that we're excited at Bestival HQ about launching our very first Bestival outside of the UK is a serious understatement. We've spent 12 years working up to this moment and are so proud to be teaming up with Toronto to launch the good ship that is Bestival overseas. I'm also very proud of our first heavy hitting line-up with typically diverse headliners, Florence and The Machine and Nas! Two amazing talents. We are also announcing; the best leftfield acts around with Caribou and Omar Souleyman, electronic music from Jamie xx and Flosstradamus. Championed from the very start by Rob da Bank, the artist known as Florence Welch started her Bestival journey in a tent in front of a few hundred people in 2008, graduating all the way up to her mind-blowing UK headliner set in 2012. Now famous globally, and ever the showstopper, we are delighted that Florence + The Machine will be one of the very first headliners for Bestival Toronto. They’ll be playing songs from their much awaited new album; How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful (due out in June) along with the classics that we all know and love. What could be better? 

Renowned for our eclecticism, hip-hop has always played a big part in the Bestival vibe, so it’s an utter joy to announce a Bestival headline slot from the incomparable Nas! With a treasure trove of platinum greats to call on, Nas just happens to be behind Illmatic, one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time.  With six number one albums on the Billboard chart, Nas is the real deal, and we’re super excited about him topping our bill! 

Bestival is at the forefront of championing global music and we will be showcasing outstanding sets from acts as diverse as UK-based Ontarian Caribou, Australian wunderkind Flume, Syrian superstar Omar Souleyman, Chicago EDM explorers Flosstradamus, and an all firing DJ set from Bestival favourite SBTRKT (DJ). 

Electronic music has always reigned for us, with an array of concept stages and mega soundsystems at the heart of our parties. For this soundclash spectacular, expect an outstanding deep house set from Grammy nominated Robin Schulz, late night head-nodding from Zhu, sizzling sounds from Hot Natured’s Jamie Jones, wonky love from Jamie xx, and classically charged beats from da Bank-backed, Grammy Award-winners Clean Bandit.

Taking place on the Bank Holiday weekend of 23rd and 24th May, and set on Southampton Common, Common People will be a glorious two-day metropolitan festival, uniting all tribes under the Southampton sky, bringing the blithe spirit of Bestival right to the heart of the city.

With a cavalcade of big hitters, including OutKast, Foals, Chic featuring Nile Rodgers, Beck, Busta Rhymes, Candi Staton, Sven Vath, Chase and Status and many more already lined up to take Bestival’s Desert Island Disco to stratospheric new heights, Rob da Bank and the Bestival crew have been beavering away behind the scenes, rooting out gleaming talents to ensure we bring you the freshest acts around. With a long history of championing the next big thing, unearthing the incredible and showcasing the best new sounds, both on his Radio 1 show and at Bestival, these are the cream of the acts getting the man like da Bank all hot under the collar. From boundary pushing mavericks to hip young chaps in this year’s slacks, we’re set to announce a ton of the most exciting bands in the world, who will be dropping in to Robin Hill on the Isle of Wight this September 4-7 to blow you away!

Smashing buckled cheerleader chants into punk riffs with razor-sharp melodies and colossal beats, Merrill, alongside long-time cohort Nate Brenner, is a force of nature when it comes to performing live, so don’t miss out.

Bestival announce brand new skanking stage: Reggae Roots

They like to keep everyone on their toes at Bestival, moving things around and adding to the action, so they're very pleased indeed to announce something crisp, brand new and good for you at this year’s Desert Island Disco - hail the Reggae Roots stage! Adding some righteous behaviour to more than 20 stages, mega soundsystems, non-stop parties and 24-hour escapism in 10 fields of wonderment, The Reggae Roots stage will be dedicated to the myriad flavours of reggae, from ska, rock steady and ragga to dub, dancehall and junglist riddims, with cool operators making sweet selections without objection.

Rob da Bank says: “It’s no secret that many of us at Bestival HQ are well into dub, reggae, roots and bass music. Having hosted many of the legends of the genre from Lee Scratch Perry to Gregory Isaacs and the Twinkle Brothers it seemed about time we had a stage just for the skankers and the low-end lovers. The soundsystem is gonna be off the scale, the stage is gonna look like a backyard Jamaican dance and you guys are going to make it all happen… in the sunshine… in love with the bass!”

Featuring Bestival regulars Reggae Roast, Tayo and jim8track as residents throughout the weekend, with Reggaerobics every day to awaken your inner lion, the Roots Reggae stage kicks off big on Thursday night with Radio 1’s Toddla T making good with the rockers and heavy beats man Dub Phizix dropping the drum n bass, plus there will be bassline pressure from Prince Fatty and Ashley Beedle on a Yardism tip.

Friday’s soundsystem controllers spreading musical sunshine via the medium of bass include erstwhile Rebel MC, Congo Natty Ft. Congo Dubz and Tenor Fly, original skanking rave dons SL2 and the incomparable Trojan Sound System. Plus there will be outlandish live antics from Uzimon, and sublime versions from Unit 137’s Ghost Writerz.

Nice Up run ting on Saturday, getting scientific with Jus Now’s sub-heavy carribean rhythms, 1Xtra’s Robbo Ranx and his dancehall waist-winders, the legendary Rodney P getting lyrical, bassbin botherer Mr Benn, Nice Up’s own Shepdog, mash-up soundman Jstar, and Dub Mafia’s Eva Lazarus. Plus there will be beat-polymath Wrongtom, up-tempo irieness from Turntable Dubbers, dapper dan Count Skylarkin, and authentic reggae power sound from Wreck It Up Crew.

And the Reggae Roots stage is gonna be large and in charge on Sunday, with the mighty Jah Shaka’s uncompromising high energy riddims capping a day that will see digital don Mad Professor at the controls, a live set from the explosive Natty and Poland’s dancefloor warriors, Dreadsquad supplying the goodness. There will also be live sets from hook-laden, bass heavy beatmiesters Rebel Control, progressive Ska types and Isle of Wight locals The Ohmz, and London based duo Subculture Sage, plus we’ll have an appearance from supreme selector Kaptin Is Dead.

Set to be another jewel in Bestival’s glittering musical crown, there are no heavy manners required at our brand new yard, the Reggae Roots stage will be irie ground.

Bestival unveil heavyweight line-up for Red Bull Music Academy stage

A takeover by Glaswegian electronic music Mafiosi Numbers, who return to Bestival for the fourth time, kicks things off on Thursday, with Jackmaster and Oneman Present Can U Dance showcasing their four-deck manoeuvres, live sets from Redhino, and Kool Clap and Spencer going back to back with Optimo.

Commenting on his return to Bestival Jackmaster said: “We've started thinking of Numbers at Bestival as a bit of a tradition within our ranks, as have myself and Oney with our b2b sets at the festival. Heavy looking forward to taking that to the next level with our 4 deck Can U Dance set and also welcoming two of our favourite DJs on the planet!”

Friday sees Harvey’s Discotheque taking charge, channelling the same wide-grinned disco as his sell-out UK comeback gig with RBMA in 2012. Techno DJ du jour Daniel Avery joins in, alongside stalwarts of the sunrise anthem Pachanga Boys, while Eric Duncan brings the party-throwing antics of his NYC outfit Rub N Tug to the fray, and the ever-charismatic Berlinite Hugo Capablanca goes maximal. The Red Bull Music Academy alumni corner is repped by Jolly Mare and Andre Laos, both from the 2013 edition in New York.

Speaking about his Red Bull Music Academy appearance at Bestival, Harvey said: “Having been a regular guest DJ at Rob’s original Sunday Best Party almost 20 years ago, it's a real treat to come full circle and curate my own Discotheque at Josie and Robby's Bestival, and what a theme! “We've put together a really great line-up of DJ's, some you will have heard and others that have blown my socks off when I've seen them DJ on my travels. It's an honour to play with them all for you all. I can't bloomin' wait”.

Saturday’s line-up comes packing some urban heat, headed up by Boy Better Know’s JME, Skepta, and ex-Kiss FM DJ Logan Sama. They’re joined by garage poster boy Preditah with regular collaborator C4, Rinse co-founder and “Godfather of Grime” Slimzee with Riko Dan, and dubstep pioneer and early FWD fave Plastician. Saturday’s special guest comes in the form of garage royalty DJ EZ, while RBMA alumni Elijah and Skilliam go b2b for an alumni hat-trick.

Bringing the weekend to a close, Sunday sees Diplo and friends take the headline slot, with appearances through the night from seasoned beatmaker Kaytranada, enigmatic remix artiste Trippy Turtle, dubstep originator Artwork and sublime selector Martelo. Rounding up Sunday’s roster, 2013 RBMA alumni DJ Slow and Sinjin Hawke weigh in.

Supplementing the music, the stage will be brought to life along a ‘dance temple’ design theme, complete with totem poles and resplendent tribal miscellanea inside and out – a fitting testament to the pantheon of talent on offer. Cranking out sermons of hip-swaying hedonism, the roster brings together acts from across the spectrum, giving Academy alumni the chance to share the bill with legends for a party to end all parties, at our Desert Island Disco.

Three More Live Acts announced for Bestival's Desert Island Disco

The good times keep on rolling at Bestival HQ! Following the amazing news that Chic featuring Nile Rodgers will join OutKast, Foals and Beck as Bestival headliners and our frankly off the hook Port announcement with Sven Väth, Annie Mac Presents, Chase and Status and loads more class DJs, we have news of three brilliant acts bringing their dancing shoes to our Desert Island Disco this September 4th – 7th at Robin Hill on the Isle of Wight.

Rob da Bank says: “Desert Island Disco seems to have lit up everyone’s imaginations with its mirrorball and palm tree vibes going down really well. So we though we'd add some disco divas and pure upfront house legends to the bill. Basement Jaxx did us the great honour of headlining the first ever Bestival way back when, so I'm doubly chuffed they're coming back to tear it up. Paloma played a few years back when she was just starting out and on the eve of her disco inspired album coming out we thought it'd be rude not to. And where do I start with Candi Staton? She may not have played Bestival before but her hits have been caned by DJs over the years. You Got The Love is surely gonna be one of those 'moments' at Bestival 2014. See you at the Disco”.

A stunning chanteuse and no mistake, Paloma Faith is the very definition of unique, so we are delighted that she will be joining us on Sunday night in the Big Top to close this year’s Bestival. With a brand new album, A Perfect Contradiction, due for release imminently, Paloma’s disco credentials are just about as good as they come and with her well know penchant for dressing up, she’s the perfect fit for a sassy climax to our Desert Island Disco.

Commenting on her Bestival appearance, Paloma Faith said: “Bestival is the best festival because everyone gets dressed up and I will be too, dressing my band up… It’s so perfect that I should be invited to play at this festival this year because my new album, which is called A Perfect Contradiction, was all influenced by the history of soul music, particularly disco. So, I was listening to artists like Candi Staton, Prince, Chaka Khan, Gloria Gaynor, all of those types of artists, Parliament, Funkadelic, the lot… It is my favourite festival without a doubt, I’m so excited, see you there!”

No strangers to spanking a dancefloor, the Bestival crew are very pleased indeed to welcome back Basement Jaxx to Robin Hill. Headliners at the very first Bestival, we know for a fact that Basement Jaxx have got a truck load of tunes that will keep you reaching for the lasers long into the night. A full on live extravaganza, Felix, Simon and co always fail to disappoint with their hip swaying, booty shaking business, so don’t miss them!

Finally for now, it is a true honour to announce that one of the legends of gospel, disco and dance music, Candi Staton will be gracing our Desert Island Disco with her presence. With super-soulful tracks like Young Hearts Run Free, her amazing version of Stand By Your Man and, of course, You Got The Love, Candi’s voice has sound-tracked two generations of joyful good times and we can’t wait to bust our moves to her grooves.

Busta Rhymes comes to Bestival 2014

Michael Molloy and Alex Evans - Rise and Fall

Sunday Best sister company of organisers of Bestival, today Tuesday 2nd April announce the release of a single composed by a teenager who tragically died in a coach crash following last year’s event. Keen musician Michael Molloy, 18, of Liverpool, was one of three people who died in the tragedy. Fifty people were hurt.
The song called 'Rise and Fall' was written by Michael a year before his death and recorded in July 2012. A second song by Michael, Hope You Know, is also being released. Both songs can be pre-ordered on iTunes from today Tuesday 2nd April and will be available for download from April 30th across all digital platforms. They cost 99p for one and £1.79 for both. The songs have been performed by Michael’s friend, band mate and musical collaborator Alex  Evans, also of Liverpool.

Michael’s brother Joe Molloy said: “It was Michael’s ambition to have his music recognised by the wider world. He never fulfilled that ambition so we, his family, are fulfilling it for him.

“Michael can never come back and we will never cease to grieve for him. We think about him every hour of every day. But Michael’s passion for music and his talent was one of the qualities which defined him and we want the rest of the world, through his music, to understand and appreciate in a small way just what a special human being he was.

“The release of the single is both in memoriam and in celebration and we wish to thank Sunday Best and all of the people who have supported Michael over many years. They know who they are.”
Joe, who lives with mother Frances, father David and younger brother Liam in Woolton, Liverpool, said the family wanted Rise and Fall to go to Number One in the charts.
Michael’s mother Frances added: “The release of Michael’s single will represent a small step in the long and hard job of rebuilding our lives. We will always be thankful for the fact that he was the happiest 18-year-old alive at the time of his death.

“He was fulfilled and full of hopes and dreams. One of those dreams was for his talent to be recognised. The release of Rise and Fall means that will now happen.”

Bestival organiser and Radio 1 DJ Rob da Bank said: “Its obvious to me that Michael was a young and rare talent and that music was an extremely important part of his life. Ive heard he absolutely loved Bestival and had a great time at Bestival 2012 so I feel privileged to be able to help his family fulfil his and their ambition of gettting Michaels music out there.”
Others who died in the crash on the A3 near Hindhead, Surrey, last September, were coach driver Colin Daulby, 63, from Warrington, and Kerry Ogden, 23, from Maghull. Other passengers, including Zach Washington-Young, suffered life changing injuries because of the crash.

HMS Bestival is now boarding! That’s right, preparations for our four day 10th Birthday spectacular are well underway and we have mega-exciting news as we can reveal our legendary Saturday and Sunday night headliners, Snoop Dogg and Elton John respectively!

Commenting on his Sunday night Bestival Headlining set, Elton John said: “I haven’t played any of the major festivals in the UK in recent years, so when the opportunity to play Bestival came up I was very interested. I’ve heard that the Bestival audience comes in fancy dress and I can’t wait to see that, they must all look amazing from the stage. At various times I have worn enormous feathered head-dresses, cloaks, hot pants, jumpsuits, clown suits, Donald Duck, Minnie Mouse, French Maid, The Eiffel Tower and The Statue of Liberty onstage! Wearing fancy dress makes us all feel less inhibited so I think it’s a great way to enjoy live music.

“2013 marks the 40th anniversary of the release of the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album, so you can expect to hear several tracks from that album. My shows always involve audience participation, singing and dancing, so make sure there is plenty of room for movement inside those fancy dress costumes!”

Taking time out from splicing the mainbrace, Rob da Bank said: “So here we are…our tenth birthday…like a small child proudly entering double figures…but here’s Bestival still wearing ill fitting shorts and running about with grazed knees giggling in the sunlight…Happy days! After 10 years of running our beloved festival, Bestival is still as psychedelically wondrous to us as the September day in 2004 when we first threw open the gates. 2013 will be a vintage year. No increase in capacity but more land, a raft of exciting changes around the site including some great new spaces and all dressed and made up in Bestival’s signature style.

“Band and DJ wise we’ve cast our net far and wide… as ever Bestival 2013 will be a magical mix of the old and the new, the vintage and classic rubbing shoulders with the ultra modern and leftfield. From one of the biggest selling artists of all time and certainly the best at fancy dress, Elton John, through the party blazing hip-hop of Snoop Dogg through amazing rare shows from the likes of The Knife,  to the newest of the new bands and acts that I’m so excited about like Jagwar Ma, Merchandise and Cashmere Cat plus literally the finest selection of house and techno DJs we've ever had from Richie Hawtin and Carl Cox to Besti stalwarts Erol Alkan and Annie Mac - this will be our best Bestival yet, so don't miss out!"

Well, what can we say? In a UK festival exclusive and playing his first major festival set on home soil in many years, we’re over the moon that Elton John and his band will be headlining Sunday night at Bestival! Very probably pop music’s most outrageous son, Sir Elton Hercules John’s reputation as an incendiary live act who pulls out all the stops to put on a scintillating show filled with glitz and glamour makes him, without any shadow of a doubt, the perfect megastar to bring the magic and mayhem of Bestival’s tenth birthday to a close. After partying at the original IOW festival as a young musician in the late 60s we’re very proud that Elton finally gets to perform on the Isle of Wight at Bestival. With more than 30 albums and over 60 UK chart hits to his name, Sunday night is guaranteed to be full-on sing-along good times. We’ve already started stockpiling the platform boots, feather boas and glitter. It’s going to be a proper party!

With Sunday night well and truly taken care of, we are beside ourselves with joy to announce that the Doggfather himself Snoop Dogg will be wowing the Bestival main stage crowd as our Saturday night headliner! Hip-hop icon, pop culture phenomenon, izzle speak don and quite simply one of the most gifted spitters ever, Snoop Dogg’s live show takes no prisoners with his laidback flow capping an almost endless catalogue of super-fat beats. With a forthcoming album produced by Major Lazer and some of hip-hop’s biggest anthems under his belt, you can expect Saturday night at Bestival to blow you away.

We have, of course, got plenty more amazing live acts coming aboard including the mighty M.I.A with a UK festival exclusive set and anthemic Scottish four-piece Franz Ferdinand playing an English festival exclusive. We’re also very pleased to announce the welcome return of psychedelic bliss merchants The Flaming Lips playing a UK festival exclusive set, off the wall Swedish art-pop duo The Knife, rap music revolutionaries Wu-Tang Clan, the unpredictably chameleonic Bombay Bicycle Club playing an English festival exclusive set and neo-soulsters The Roots playing a UK Festival exclusive set.

Nation to host Bestival coach crash tribute gig says Rob Da Bank

In September 2012, Bestival promoters and the entire festival team were utterly devastated to learn of the fatal coach crash involving Bestival-goers following our 2012 event. After extensive consultation with those affected and as a tribute to everyone involved, we would like to announce a very special charity night ‘Bestival Benefit’ on Saturday 30th March 2013.

 

“Bestival HQ and everyone connected to Bestival 2012 were devastated by what happened after our festival on the A3. We’ve been working to get an event set up to show some love and hopefully raise lots of money for those affected and their families and we’re pleased it’s in the home town of many of those involved; Liverpool. Thanks to everyone who has rallied round and contributed to making this event happen – everyone from the DJs and live bands to the venue Nation are donating their time and services for free so please get the date in your diary and prepare to party for a very good cause. Michael Molloy, Kerry Ogden and coach driver Colin Daulby died in the tragic accident, Zach Washington-Young suffered life-changing injuries and many others involved were also affected. We knew that we had to do everything we could to show that they are in our hearts and minds so we’d be honoured if you would join us in paying tribute to them, helping us to raise as much money for charity as possible.

Iconic Liverpool landmark Nation, the home of Cream, has kindly provided us with the venue for a fundraising show hosted by Rob da Bank and The Cuban Brothers that will feature some of Liverpool’s finest and guests doing what they do best with proceeds from the night donated to charity.
