Chicago born Jack Kovacs to release debut EP The State Line

Chicago Jack Kovacs debut EP The State Line

Chicago born Jack Kovacs to release debut EP The State Line

Chicago born Jack Kovacs is a force to be reckoned with on his debut EP "The State Line," due out on October 21st, 2014. A Los Angeles transplant, Jack left the City of Broad Shoulders for the City of Angeles to study guitar performance at the University of Southern California. It was in the midst of musical learning and discovery that his world was opened up to the art of songwriting, forever changing the course of his dreams. His breathtaking, cinematic stories come to life with an experimental edge that makes beautiful use of arrangement and dynamics, effortlessly pulling inspiration from the singer/songwriters of the1970's and today. With Jack counting his influences among iconic artists like Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell, as well as Sufjan Stevens and Bon Iver; it's easy to understand where the emotional sensibilities originate from. Self produced alongside Tim Kobza, his 2014 release, "The State Line" is full of layered harmonies and present storytelling, designed to connect to the heart and soul of each and every listener.

From the first note, opening track "State Line" is incandescently reminiscent. A song that was inspired by Jack's courage to leave behind everything he knew to follow a dream, you can feel the timidity and uncertainty echoing from each guitar riff and subtle vocal turn. The song is about "the unexpected journey that life sometimes calls you into, in spite of promises you made or visions of your own future," and Jack captures that perfectly. Not to mention the combination of vocalist Huxlee's soaring and soft voice, which collides in perfect cohesion with Jack's warm and personal style, brings the listener that much closer to the music. The playful "Jenny" is an almost autobiographical look into the process of falling in love. The rich and layered arrangement give breath to the youthful and giddy emotions often associated with puppy love, and as the song grows and expands, so does the depth of the feelings.  A toe tapping rhythmic intimacy and rolling piano build a full scale exploration of the journey, concluding with an epic collision of guitars and drums.

On the harrowingly cryptic "The Empty House," Jack dives deep into the pool of cinematic music. Pulled from the emotional aspects of loss, horror and tragedy, the track inspires a pall of dread with the layers of vocals. Male and female voices (provided by Huxlee, who sings throughout the EP) intertwine together in quiet reverie, while Jack’s hypnotic guitar playing underscores their tale. The lyrics give only the sparest details to invoke a sense of mystery and fear. There's a hauntingly intriguing pull to the song that wraps around the listener, leaving them riveted to the conclusion. The sparse "At Sea" allows the drifting wanderer to find solace in the light of the sun. Of the song itself, Jack says "… the end of the song's journey is not in finding the shores of purpose and meaning, but rather exploring the great nothing with that beautiful light, and the space that is left for dreaming." Recorded with just a microphone, a guitar, and his own voice, it remains a track based entirely in storytelling as it exposes the root of it's creation. Beautiful and languid, it gives hope and shelter to all those seeking their own path. The beautiful opening vocals on "Song of the Summer," which also serves as the EP's first single, allow you to feel those quiet summer days of the past echoing through the guitar riffs and building, expansive chorus. It boarders on the new, woodsier trend in indie rock, though still captures the 1970's feel of carefree abandon that is fluent in so much of Jack's music. The track stands as an ode to all of those summer time anthems from your youth, and the memories that immediately attach themselves to the melody when you hear it.

Chicago's Lightfoils to release Debut LP Hierarchy

Chicago's Lightfoils Debut LP Hierarchy

Chicago's Lightfoils to release Debut LP Hierarchy

One of Chicago’s brightest new bands, Lightfoils pushes the shoegaze genre into new territory. Formed in 2010, the band is comprised of Neil Yodnane and Zeeshan Abbasi on guitars, Jane Zabeth on vocals, Cory Osborne on bass and John Rungger on drums. Lightfoils mean business. Building on the promise of their debut ep, Hierarchy was produced by Sanford Parker and does not disappoint. “Polar Waves” welcomes you with guitars that chime and ring, before the track slowly lifts you blissfully into space. Immediately following is “Last One”, which seethes with a simmering intensity and propulsive rhythm section, and you’re hooked.

Only two tracks in, Lightfoils already own your soul. Hazy soundscapes, ringing guitar, icy synth, feather-light vocals, and actual compelling tunes, Lightfoils use Hierarchy to serve notice: their EP was no fluke, and they will no longer be ignored. If you’re new to Lightfoils, drop the needle on “Diastolic”, “Last One”, or the strangely compelling “alovetodestroy” and you’ll begin to understand what all the fuss is about. But there’s more than just three tracks to this album. Once you get inside, it’s a beautifully rich and textured world to explore.

They will also have an LP release party with A Sunny Day In Glasglow on July 8th at The Empty Bottle.

MusicMafia presents Chicago artist Tink

Chicago Tink

MusicMafia presents Chicago artist Tink

Tink has already established herself as a household name in her native state of Chicago after receiving the head nod from fellow Chi-town resident Chief Keef among others but singer/songwriter/rapper Tink is set to go global as her favorable come back of 90's style R'n'B continues to draw attention. Compared to the likes of Lauryn Hill and Aaliyah her two new tracks give a perfect balance between her two stlyes.

With Men a collaboration from herself and DJ Dahi (Drake’s ‘Worst Behavior’, Kendrick Lamar’s ‘Money Trees’, SZA’s ‘Babylon’) Tink gives her softer, more vocal side with a Yours Truly and Adidas Originals Songs from Scratch series.

Used 2 Know has Tink adopt her rap style to a degree produced by Vogue featured beat-maker Spaceman.

The EP consisting of five songs was produced and engineered by engineer/producer Sean Payne (Cyanotic, Glitch Mode Recording). “This EP has a lot of really nice ear candy,” said Sean. “It reminds me a lot of Mogwai.” Jim Rose, founder of The Jim Rose Circus and a fan of the band, claims, “There's nothing counterfeit about Counterfeit i. Maps and Atlases @ The Kazimier Liverpool - Review

Maps and Atlases @ The Kazimier Liverpool - Review

Maps and Atlases @ The Kazimier Liverpool - Review

The Kazimier Liverpool saw itself the setting for the latest stop on the Maps and Atlases tour and being a Tuesday night they had quite a good turn out for their set.

Following a great performance from Tall Ships, the Chicago based group entered a very elaborate set full of glowing triangles and drum base shaped light left of the stage with lead singer Dave Davidson sporting his familiar large beard and glasses.

The set started off in quiet a reserved way with the likes of  "Pigeon" and "If this is" and Dave's nimble fingers doing wonders with the neck of his guitar and sounding very reminiscent of the King of Leon if it was fronted by Paul Simon and before they became watered down and mainstream. The mixture of blue grass, folk and indie going down well with the crowd but over all I felt that the first part of the performance was a bit disconnected and flat.

Luckily the latter part of the set put pay to that and with a rousing cover of Tears for Fears' "Everybody wants to rule the world" both the band and the audience seemed to bring it up a level and there was far more interaction and enthusiasm with bassist Shiraz Dada dancing around like a man on fire whilst playing the likes of  the wonderful foot tapping track that is "Fever" and ending on "Solid Ground".

Maps and Atlases manage to end the set on a high note saving what was dangerously slipping into the mundane and before the audience ears started to slip away.
